If you can keep the microphone within ~6 inches of your mouth, it's better. Otherwise, stick with a headset.
Burgerbob has a point. But there is more to it such as you can tweak the settings that are color coded to make it more sensitive to your voice. Also, it's a testament to how it can isolate your voice in a busy environment. For example I often use speech recognition with a tv or music going and don't have to worry about it picking it up.
I wrote down on on a piece of tape on the mic as it's hard to remember:
Yellow: headphone volume (if connected) Blue: microphone sensitivity-how loud the mic picks you up Green: playback audio-how loud you hear your own voice (I turn that off, its not the recording audio its you hearing your own voice separately)
