Broken Sony TV, getting the run-around from Costco and Allstate/Square-Trade Warranty

46 September 10, 2026 at 09:57 AM
I purchased a Sony OLED 77" TV from Costco on Sept 11 2022, using the Citi Costco card if that matters. The TV was a floor unit, and was sold with a bundled Allstate 3yr warranty that went into effect after the first two years of manufacturer warranty are up. This warranty was not a separate "Do you want to add it", it was included with the TV purchase same as tv's now do. Tomorrow marks year 4 of the Allstate warranty, so well within the time frame. And I have the original paper receipt to confirm all this too.

On 9/6, the TV was working perfectly and was turned off at nighttime. On 9/7, the TV failed to power on. I am able to see a red LED flashing 4 times repeatedly at the very bottom of the TV.

I started the claim process with Allstate on 9/7, only to learn today while on the phone with them that the TV is actually ineligible for the warranty due to it being a floor model, meaning it only had a 2 year warranty (and now I wonder if Sony would even cover a floor model under their warranty). They have since closed my case that took 3 days of constant emailing back and forth to get to this state, and have disabled me from opening a new claim without first calling in now (probably voiding future coverage now).

Allstate ended the call by saying they recommend contacting Costco since they shouldn't have included the warranty, to which I said "yeah that makes sense" and do they transferred me over. Costco Technical and Warranty Services told me then that what they see about Allstate not covering floor units makes sense as it's in their policy, and that I shouldn't have been able to purchase warranty for a floor model, but also that there is nothing set in stone currently about it specifically not being able to be bundled at all with floor model TV's.

Costco finished the call saying it is outside of their 2 year manufacturer warranty scope so they can't do anything about it, and that "they can't exactly go back 4 years to correct this problem". I don't think excluding a floor model from a warranty policy is unreasonable, but that should not be my responsibility to verify it was void for a display unit when it's included in the TV purchase and sold by Costco as a 5 year warranty backed product.

I'm unsure how to continue. Has anyone experienced anything similar or would be able to chime in with anything useful?

Probably a long shot but if you have good documentation you could try to dispute with the credit card company.

I've never disputed something that long after purchase so I don't know if it's even possible but a simple phone call should tell you.

Provide the credit card company with the documentation showing you have the extended warranty and they are not honoring it. It's too bad you didn't 'purchase' the extended warranty, that would probably give you more leverage as you would have clearly paid for a service they are not providing...

Good luck.

Pretty much sounds like you got screwed over with a "No, it's their fault, shame on them" and a "Ooops, it's our fault but shame on us for doing that." but since it was an oops from beyond their statues of limitation, you kind of fell in the cracks.

You could complain to Costco at the corporate level and hope to push your way to some sort of presidential escalation but a lot of companies are just taking the hit and not doing that kind of customer service any longer. There is a presidential escalation path for high rollers (friends of higher ups and such) but we don't know that process nor do they give it out.

If you had a home warranty you could file it against that as it should have covered everything in your home, including all electronics, from the time you purchased it and it sounds like you have the receipts and proof of purchase, but without that, I think the TV is lost to you.

You need to read the contract with Allstate and see what it says about floor models. If it was an honest mistake that is what is was and you should get your money back for the cost of a warranty that you cannot use.

I assume you tried this :
We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with your TV, the red light blinking may mean an internal issue but sometimes it may be just a glitch in the software. We suggest you to follow these troubleshooting steps in order to determine what is happening with your TV:

1- Unplug all the devices from the back of the TV (HDMI connections).

2- Unplug the TV from the wall outlet/power strip/surge protector and leave the TV unplugged for about 2 minutes.

3- If you are using a power strip, surge protector or something similar, try connecting the TV directly to the wall outlet and do not connect any devices (HDMI), just connect the TV to the wall outlet.

4- Wait for about 10 seconds, if your TV does not turn on, try pressing the power button on the TV (usually it is below the Sony logo, underneath the TV or on the left/right side).

If you shine a flashlight on the screen while the tv is on and see a faint image, it could be the power board. Otherwise, as was noted, it could be the backlights or something else. Depending on how hard it is to get the panel apart and get to the boards and how available a replacement power board is for your model tv on EBay, you could try to replace the power board in the former case and hope it solves the problem (and return the board if it doesn't). Otherwise, probably best to just move on. The modern day electronics\appliance industry is generally made to toss and replace and not repair most items as the cost to repair is often just not cost effective relative to the cost of a new item.

My 2 cents.
