The NVIDIA Shield remote is the familiar OEM controller for Shield TV, valued for reliable everyday use and solid compatibility with the Shield ecosystem. The remote itself works better than the ONN alternatives for Shield, and the Shield platform is praised for smooth performance, broad codec support, and easy media playback from USB or Plex. The main knocks are its awkward triangular shape, a quiet find feature, and the Netflix button that often needs remapping. It feels like a functional but dated accessory, best for Shield owners who want the official remote.

Common Questions (5)

  • The genuine Shield remote works better overall on Shield devices. ONN remotes can connect, but they may need frequent resets, have weak backlight behavior, and can have connection issues with Shield.

  • The Shield is valued for performance, codec support, and home theater playback, including 1080p-to-4K upscaling and Dolby audio support. The upscaling benefit can be subtle on some TVs, but the device is still favored for compatibility and responsiveness.

  • The OEM Shield remote is usable, but the WeChip Air is preferred for easier typing and searching because it has a full rubber keyboard, a better D-pad, and gyro control. The Shield remote still works well, but its shape is awkward and the Netflix button often needs remapping.

  • Yes. It can play a movie library from a USB SSD using VLC, which can make a separate HTPC unnecessary.

  • Yes. Multiple Shield remotes from 2015, 2017, and 2019 are still being used daily and have remained reliable for years.

This is a good video showing the power of 4K upscaling in the NVidia Shield

I'm wondering the same thing. I've been using firesticks for years and wondering if the up scaling of the sheild is better?
The way everything is smooth is better, much more powerful and the best thing is no bastardized fire OS to deal with locking you down.

For years I used the Mcable I upscaled my 2015 shield in 2015. It's the same tech that Nvidia used. Look on eBay you can get them for like $30 bucks or $35 bucks now. They're getting a little outdated now since they've been out since 2015. I was banned from the Nvidia Shield forum because back in the day I suggested using these mCables while they were thinking about incorporating the AI into their devices. They didn't want people buying a $30 (discounted) cable instead of their $200 device. Pretty sure I used a slick deal back in like 2018 or 19 to get another bunch of those mCables. I think the gaming mcable now adapter still pretty expensive.

It will upscale your 1080 resolution to 4K which makes a huge difference plus if you have a home theater the sound will be far better with all of the Dolby codecs.
I've got two; a 2015 with the micro SD slot, and a 2017. Only the 2019 upscales, but I think a lot of TVs do that too. It's been so long since a hardware update that the shield feels like it's EOL. I would be happy snagging a Walmart ONN Google TV box. I for sure like them better than fire tv or Roku. I tried playing some videos from a USB stick at a buddy's house, and the Roku was pretty picky about codecs. I tried playing some different media from USB on the 3rd gen fire cube, and it kept freezing in VLC like it went to sleep. I had to unplug and replug to get it to work. To maintain I had to hit a button every 10 minutes. Back before the ram prices went wacky I bought a new mini PC for just over $200 that was more powerful than the shield. It has a 6800h with 680m igpu.

I didnt mention the 2019 version as being the only upscaling device since the 2019 version is the only one available new.

I just looked into the M cable Cinema edition since I was not that familiar with them.
I can only find them on Amazon and Ebay for $129

I have one and like it but I have a $50 Google TV streamer from ONN/Walmart that I like just as much at this point.
Yeah the Onn 4K has really been catching up to the Shield, and it's surprisingly well supported. I still prefer the Shield Pro, but I wouldn't buy a 2nd one, I would instead get another Onn 4K.

I'll put this in another comment, but as to the Remote deal; the OEM remote is fine, not great; owners will want to download button reMapper and make that Netflix button a Mute button or a dummy.
But when buying a new one (OPs deal) I would suggest instead getting something like the WeChip Air remote that has a full rubber keyboard on the back, a direction pad better than the OEM remote, and it makes typing logins and searches SO much easier. It's also great for web browsing cuz it has the gyro remote. And it still has a Mic button for voice search. There's other brrands also, but I like that this one looks like the apple TV remote. I use it on my Shield more than the OEM one.

That's my 2 cents, because I HATE typing logins on a remote, and I don't love using a phone app for it either, and I have reservations about always using the Mic for input.

I had bought one yesterday at this price, it was stuck at $30 for as long as i can remember. I just googled that you can use the Onn streamer remote on the nvidia shield. I would have been happy with that. Edit: see comment below, Onn remote has connection issues with Shield
I use a fire stick remote with voice search, thanks for the info on the Onn model

I barely purchased a Shield last month and it was extremely buggy. I reset it, and now it works flawlessly. It's rendering my HTPC useless since I'm able to connect an SSD drive via USB to play my movie library via VLC player.

I wish I knew this earlier. haha.

The upscaling barely makes a difference; it's less noticeable than changing the sharpness setting in your TV panel's settings. Best things about the Shield is the performance, compatibility, and responsiveness, so that's what you get it for.
