Brother's compact black and white laser all in one line is praised for long service life, low running costs, and dependable toner support, with generic consumables staying affordable and replacement drums and toner still easy to find. It also prints reliably over USB or on a network, and the hardware itself is described as hard to kill. The main drawbacks are its bulky, heavy footprint and some wireless setup friction, especially from Android phones. A few comments also raise questions about refurbished stock and Amazon Renewed handling, so the appeal is strongest if size and setup hassle are not dealbreakers.
Common Questions (5)
Brother laser printers are described as very durable, with multiple units lasting many years and still working well. The brand is also noted for good compatibility with third-party toner and continued toner/drum availability over long periods.
Yes. It is described as gigantic and a big, heavy machine, so it needs more space than a typical compact printer. The upside is that it is also reported to be very durable and long-lasting.
Yes. Generic consumables are described as super affordable, and Brother printers are reported to work well with third-party toner and drums. That lowers running costs over time.
Direct factory-refurbished units from Brother are preferred over Amazon Renewed because the refurbishing process is clearer and more trusted. The printer hardware itself is expected to last a long time; future issues are more likely to be driver support than mechanical failure.
It can work, but Android wireless printing may take a lot of fiddling to set up. Once configured, the printer is reported to work great.

I bought a Brother MFC-9700 around 2003 at "half price" around $300 and it's still going strong. I can still find toner at a good price. I thought about replacing it when there were compatibility issues going from Windows 7 to 10, but it works fine when I connected the USB to my router and that let me make it available to other computers on my network. I said I would replace it with a similar Brother model, like this one, whenever it dies but it just keeps on trucking.
I know this is not really relevant to this specific deal, but I wanted to share my experience with the brand's reliability and continued support of toner and drums after 20 years.

Hopefully it's better than their usual stock handling, given the amount of used stuff they ship to customers as "new" these days. Things have been going downhill since Jassy took over.
My Brother MFC, which was a display unit purchased in 2012, is still going strong.
I'll probably have to retired it with my next computer, due to the lack of driver support, not because of any issue with the printer itself.

I'm seeing $169.99 as the price on Brother's website. Also what is this I'm seeing in the title on Amazon "Includes Refresh Subscription Trial"? Is that something one has to cancel after purchasing?
