The state of receivers makes me sad, between the prices and the sad state of inputs and outputs on a $600 receiver it just feels really bad.

Next you're going to tell me the average price of a car is $30k (it's not).

I was recently at a dealer getting some work on my 2007 car and of course they want you to get a new one... .I made the comment about not having $30k for a car and the person laughed and said ... think $40k out the door! Ugh!

Your dealer's wrong. The average price of a car is closer to $50k in 2026! If you're living in the US, did you forget that "fearless leader" has made everything worse?

The price has gone up a lot over time. Picking up a car during covid was impossible. All of the electronics and now electric cars. I want a simple car that does not break. I do not need power everything or self driving/lane assist, electronics to tell me my tires are low (I check them every couple at months at Costco), satelite radio, etc. Maybe safety features like anti-lock brakes, backup camera optional, etc.

For something that depreciates so fast, a $50k investment in a car does not make any sense. If you drive it for 10 years, the cost is $5k per year, plus licenses, gas, insurance, etc. So that is a heavy investment. And with all of the electronics, at some point they become obsolete. My wife's infotainment center on her car 2022, has just gone bad and there is currenlty no fix. So the whole center of the dash is bad after 5 years... I am not too sure who thinks we can afford $50k every 5 or so years... That is crazy!

I am really tired of these crap comments. I don't have to show you a current better deal to say this is not a good deal. Why is that so hard to understand?
lol I think this is self inflicted frustration on your part.
I would suggest not claiming what is or not a deal to everyone without explanation.
Especially if you expect people to just take your word on it.

It's not hard to understand why someone would ask a common sense question, if you don't.

Between this and the Onkyo TX-NR7100 (2021) from Adorama at the same price, I'd probably pick this up for the ease of return in case anything happens. The price isn't as great as past Costco offerings like the AVR-X1700H (2021) for $400 in 2024. This AVR-S970H (2022) is a generation older than the newest model which is what Costco should be offering instead, AVR-S980H (2026), but it sure beats anything else due to recent price hikes everywhere for all receivers.

If you must have the newest model, the refurbished AVR-S980H is $650 at Accessories4less.com, which includes 1440p pass-through and AMD FreeSync, which are more useful when using with a PC or gaming console. Unless those new features are a deal breaker for you, this price for the AVR-S970His still better than other offerings today.

Yeah it's not great but for what receivers cost these days it's not a bad deal either. Just shocking it is almost twice as much. However we are winning so remember that when you buy this and put gas in your 50k car.

Makes me sad when my old Pioneer 50w will blow this one out of the water at half volume (two channel)

Agreed, a $50K investment in a car is stupid. $30K will suffice to get you something like a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic which, if you don't abuse it and take it for regularly scheduled oil/filter changes, should easily last you +10 years, even double that in many cases. But if you're stupid and insist on some big honking $50K SUV or truck from some less-than super-reliable brand, good luck with that.
