This looked potentially interesting to me until I saw the review commentary regarding too-small / cheap speaker wire connections

Great price for what it is. IMO, sony tends to produce a very pleasing happy medium of sound signatures. Not overly bright, not overly warm etc. This would be a fine unit for some larger bookshelf speakers. An optional sub would require the speaker connections to pass through as I don't see a pre-out. Bluetooth probably fine, can't expect internet at this price unless you have a good used shop locally.

I have one of these, and have gotten a few for other people setting up 2.0 systems. They work really well, sound decent enough, and have a passable phono preamp. I think is really great for those people who are getting into vinyl or want to graduate from all in one/suitcase turntables. Grab this, two speakers from marketplace and you have a real nice budget setup.

As Julian Hirsch, the electrical engineer who was in charge of testing for Stereo Review magazine for many years said, "no properly functioning receiver or amplifier has a sound of its own." Until someone proves otherwise with double-blind testing, I believe it.

Agreed. However, most consumers, are not going to be running this in pure direct mode.
