just want to point out the best value in any Garmin will always be when they hit "factory refurbished" because they are virtually new, often completely unused

so unless you are giving as a gift, wait for it (will be under $200)

my only problem with the vivoactive line is I really want all five buttons as a runner which means either fenix or forerunner only (so you never have to look at the screen and can even turn touchscreen off during the activity so you don't get phantom scrolling)

imho the minimum best deal would be a Forerunner 265 as a factory refurb (or 255 if you insist on MIP display but why as AMOLED is amazing)

This is a solid deal if the Vivoactive will work for you. I had a couple issues with my Epix Gen 2 47mm: It is big, and while I usually love that, I can't sleep with it on because it's bulky. And... It tore up my dress shirt sleeve cuffs. I've really liked having the Vivoactive and haven't missed much of anything. It is much more comfortable to sleep in, solid battery life, overall does everything I need. Although it doesn't look quite as premium, it is discreet and basically goes unnoticed, which I'm fine with. I also did 5 runs wearing both and the distances were both extremely consistent and within a percent of each other and HR with a couple percent. Very happy with mine and this price is great.

What a good garmin model for the casual wear and occasional runner. Will need the timer feature for refereeing games? 265 seems more for runners. Thanks

BTW, how high percentage wise are factory refurbished really watches returned? My mind tends to think they had some type of defect and were fixed by the factory.

This is a great one. While Avalon isn't wrong in that you can get so sweaty, the touchscreen is a little touchy / inconsistent, you need to be doing some serious mileage and really sweating for it ever to be an issue. Even then, it means swiping twice because of a missed swipe. I have this watch and run ~20-30MPW, never had an issue. I agree that it's nice to have the extra buttons, but totally not required and this watch is fine and a great buy at this price. You can set the timer in several different ways (activity, widget, etc.) and all will work for your use case.

The other poster is right in that it doesn't feel nearly as solid as a Fenix or Epix, but I find it fine and unobtrusive and wear it in a business environment every day. Nobody cares about your watch unless it's really nice or incredibly crappy. This fits in the center of the band of "random smart watch - don't care" category.

That last part is spot on. I switched to a vivoactive awhile back and the only people who ever comment are the few other people who have one. I wear it with different bands and it goes pretty much unnoticed, which is fine for me. I have flashier watches if I want to dress up. While the vivoactive isn't the most feature loaded watch, it does plenty, is unobtrusive for daily wear and sleep, and has a week+ battery life.
