I sorta doubt these are going to be able to run useful local models on hardware that costs that much. My 48GB M5 Pro MBP is kinda midrange for Apple AI and I push like 25 tokens a second on the latest Qwen models, and that thing is over $3k new now.

I don't understand the pricing behind these even at these "early" prices. Computer hardware is at insane prices today but this still seems like a uniquely bad value even still.

The top of the line unit is a Jetson Thor for a "deal" at 10k. You can buy one now for 5500 and put your own software on it

Yeah this seems a bit crazy to me, like someone else said, no idea why this price makes sense given the hardware. The midrange one, you would be much better off just off the top of my head grabbing a Framework desktop with Halo Strix at 128 Gbs.

I guess it's like Alexa, combined with Internet of things stuff (lights, curtains, doorbell, security), some AI stuff for going further than voice commands to also tracking events in your house, like you said, but it's also a NAS where you can store your pictures and movies and such.I dunno, can it seamlessly play all my downloaded movies to my TV like Plex? Can I ask it to edit photos or generate images for me? Feels like a weird mix... wouldn't a power user who could see the value in this utility ALSO have the know-how to set up a homelab for themselves instead?

It's local AI (at least supposedly), that's the whole selling point. And yeah, knowing everything going on in your house is nice. I got into homelabbing a bit and have Home Assistant, there's so much you can do with it it's kinda obscene...
