This is their entry level plastic. While it would be a good gift imo, if you don't need asap you can probably find better quality discs buying seperate, though the price would be closer to $40.

Do you have any recommendations for a few separate discs that would make a good starter set?

Anything 10 speed and under. Lighter will be ypur friend too unless it's super windy. Super windy you want heavier and faster disc speed. Nerf released some super light discs that are approved for tournament play. I hear those are pretty good for beginners.
Also as a beginner, throwing a mid range or a putter is even good for learning.

Yeah, I've heard good things about nerf's discs as well. Sadly though after discounts/shipping they're still $45ish.

@JMB generally this should be a good starter kit, but I've been trying to post disc golf discs every week or two so might just pick a couple out. Hip was right though about starting with lighter discs (so aim for under 165g for the driver/mid). Recommend checking used discs at play it again sports or maybe your local disc golf store would have them. Many do a lost and found program and sometimes they'll resell discs after a point in time that no one claims them.
