Not sure because I don't have a new enough controller to try it. Batteries last decently long. Biggest thing is sliding them into the charger the right way.

I've had these for a while (couple years) and when I put a usb c cable in it does not charge these batteries, may be user error but what I do is use a usb extension cable, plug it in the usb a male port on this charger and use a old usb 5w charging brick that I set off the side/hidden and they work great. Always got a charged battery since they are 2 included.

Have had a few of these over the years if you are an occasional player they work well but note that the whole battery status that you see on the Xbox does not work with this so they will die without any warning. Much prefer using rechargeable double As as I play for a few hrs a night and AA rechargeables will give you a warning as they drop a low and then you can swap in two new double A's without having to get a new battery pack before it disconnects.

That said it's cheap AF. (I think the most I've paid for one of these at BB was $12)

I got the Series X one for $6.99 Open Box Excellent back in May, disappointed I missed the opportunity to snag a pair of extra batteries open box for $2 or $3, but still might spring $6 for them. I must fall in to what you describe as an occasional player as they last me about a week of long daily sessions of AC Shadows. Never been too bothered by the sudden controller disconnect as there's always a fully charged battery right there, but as the battery life deteriorates I can see it would be annoying if it starts doing that every couple days, or if you're the type of gamer who does online multiplayer where disconnects could ruin your rankings.

So I looked in to this, and as you say, no they won't. If you open the battery compartment and look on the left between the + and - connectors you'll see an additional connector with about 4 pads. For a rechargeable pack to work in Play & Charge mode, it must have a corresponding connector. The batteries that come with the NEXT product just have a plastic nub where that should be. Very few 3rd party accessory makers use batteries that have this connector that communicates with the Xbox that is a special type of battery, what the battery status is more accurately, as well as handling charging protocol. Even the ones that claim to offer similar functionality have opted with using a charging port built in to the battery and accessible by a new battery cover with a window than try and crack the proprietary connection in the controller. NEXT does have a Play & Charge kit, available for $16.99, that draws power from the controller's USB C port, but even then their battery only has one of the 4 pads that the official battery has, so you don't get the more accurate battery status, and presumably no warning before disconnecting when out of charge.
