A New York Times New and Noteworthy Book

From the bestselling author of Waking Up and The End of Faith, an adaptation of his wildly popular, often controversial podcast

"Civilization rests on a series of successful conversations." —Sam Harris

Sam Harris—neuroscientist, philosopher, and bestselling author—has been exploring some of the most important questions about the human mind, society, and current events on his podcast, Making Sense. With over one million downloads per episode, these discussions have clearly hit a nerve, frequently walking a tightrope where either host or guest—and sometimes both—lose their footing, but always in search of a greater understanding of the world in which we live. For Harris, honest and rational conversation, no matter how difficult or controversial, represents the only path to moral and intellectual progress.

This book includes a dozen of the best conversations from Making Sense, including talks with Daniel Kahneman, Timothy Snyder, Nick Bostrom, and Glenn Loury, on topics that range from the nature of consciousness, free will, and artificial intelligence, to politics and extremism, to living ethically. Together they shine a light on what it means to "make sense" in the modern world.

How do we navigate the most complex and divisive issues of our time?
  • Philosophy of Mind: Explore the 'hard problem' of consciousness and the nature of the self with thinkers like David Chalmers and Anil Seth.
  • The Illusion of Free Will: Challenge your deepest intuitions about choice and responsibility in a conversation that unpacks the scientific case against free will.
  • Existential Risk: Confront the future of humanity with Nick Bostrom, discussing the perils of superintelligence and other threats to our long-term survival.
  • Reason and Public Discourse: Join conversations with figures like Timothy Snyder and Glenn Loury that test the limits of civil dialogue on politics, tribalism, and extremism.

Sam [youtube.com] never made any sense. People just never looked into his past, never mind his science credentials [emilkirkegaard.com], neuro science is currently facing a reproducibility crisis.

Haha. I love how you direct people to this Emil Kirkegaard who is a known far-right white supremacist. And writes on a pseudoscientific journal. He has been discredited by all respectable intellectuals. He is not a scholar but a fraud and in no position intellectually to question/challenge Sam Harris' PHD in neuroscience. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenPsych#Founders

Just proving the point.

Emil said nothing wrong about Sam Harris, attacking his character makes no "sense".

Extra funny as others have said the same about Sam for acknowledging differences.

Your "credible" intellectuals are creationists who ignore the evidence as well. What Emil wrote is indisputable, Sam bought a phd with his mother's money and did nothing with it other than to use it as a skin suit.

Sam is the strike against the concept of an "intellectual", it just means someone chosen by power to be platformed to suit powers agenda, its why no one asked questions about his background, and why he was always platformed for saying nothing really controversial, he was a useful pawn who served a time when media control was near absolute, no one could speak back, and he hasn't survived well since that changed with the internet.

Why do his fans who loved to deboonk everything never check on their leader, its because none of it was what it claimed to be.

I have no clue if Sam Harris is legit or not, and I have zero desire to read this book, but this is what I found about that guy Emil Kirkegaard that you cited:

Quote :
associated with fringe political and eugenics groups, drew widespread condemnation for writings from 2010 to 2012 in which he suggested a "compromise" for pedophiles involving non-consensual sexual acts with sleeping or drugged children
Now that profile pic y'all typically have makes sense.

You are proving the point, all Kirkegaard did was look into his scientific credentials. In order avoid dealing with the findings you have to attack his character. His post was a thought experiment from 2012 during the pirate party era and the utilitarian morality around it with the context being an argument over censorship. If you don't like that kind of thing you won't like Sam Harris either because he also boils down to the same utilitarian ethics, its literally his new scientific moral system he tried to sell and never completed because it was absurd.

He was 23 when he made the argument, Harris was 37. Its the same utilitarian autism you see in the effective altruism cult today, and you have to understand the context is he is dutch, they are weird, cp wasn't banned there until the 80s, but its the model society for the leftists who complain about him, and if you didn't understand the dutch joke in Austin Powers, now you do.

The modern update to this rationalist edge lord stuff is the Aella cow question.

You didn't cite your quote because its rational wiki, which is a fringe left website. The part they leave out is after that section of the blog he wrote the solution was castration for pedophiles.

I don't endorse everything Emil, he's part of the rationalist set that took the jab, there are limits to reason, but he's not wrong on Sam Harris.

None of them hold up, Dawkins helped turn London into what he complained about as an atheist, and Sagan spent his time promoting myths like nuclear winter where he did the Fauci of I am the science of consensus, all from a model so simplistic it didn't even factor rain.
