Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

If you have a newer car that uses a keyless fob and park your car in your driveway or on the street, don't use these. Makes it easy for thieves to identify where your keys are in your house and use a modified baby monitor to amplify the signal to steal your car.

Mark Rober did a video on this and it's pretty nuts how simple it is: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h0EGCnBjTVk

I think I saw the video but wasn't he inside the house when he received that signal or right at the front door?

They stood in front of the main door. This is because the key fob was kept in a dish near the main door. The "hack" basically amplifies the signal from the fob and repeats it to the car, allowing the thieves to get in, start the car, and drive away.

The video from Mark Rober does an amazing job explaining how the hack works and provides two easy ways to protect yourself from it. The first is to keep your key fob away from windows, outside facing walls, and doors. This will prevent thieves from getting close enough to your keys to use the repeater. If you can't do that, you can also use a cookie tin, which will work as a faraday cage and protect your fob from unwanted listeners.
