Anyone have any insight on which would be a better portable machine to use for local LLMs between this and the Asus ROG z13 Flow 64gb ($2099.99) & which may be a better buy (price to performance)?
Additional context - completely new to local LLMs & longtime Mac user switching to windows
I have the Z Flow with 128 gb of ram and can allocate 96 gb to LLMs. If you know the limitations of LLMs, you'll be happy with either device, IMO. I'd recommend trying both (maybe even open box if you can find it) and see which one you like because the tokens will probably be similar. FWIW, a tablet is not a laptop… and OLED is way better. Z Flow is perfect for me but I suspect most would prefer the traditional laptop.

You're going to need todo much more research to know WHICH and what LLMs you plan to use. Many of the tools out there much much faster with nvidia GPUs, and you can fit some good compressed models into the 16gb 5080 on this laptop. ALSO nvidia cuda is still easier for many many tools, requiring less setup and custom software setup like the AMD AI processors do. So, easier to run more stuff on nvidia, harder to run some stuff on AMD, some stuff runs fine on both. The 128gb rog flow will allow you to fit some larger models, but as mentioned many decent models of smaller size will run way faster on the 5080. I would not recommend this size $$ on EITHER of these laptops for AI / LLM until you are not "completely new" to local LLMs.
i have the 4070 , 32gb ram version of this same laptop , itching to see if the upgrade would be worth it , very tempted
a quick search shows the G14 with 5080 is 50 - 80% faster in games. It's not just that the 5080 is faster (and with double the VRAM), but the maximum TDP under manual mode on the G14 is 120 watts vs 90 watts for the 4070. In fact the 5080 would continue to scale its performance upwards with more power all the way up to 175 watts, but (presumably for the compact and thin form factor) Asus has capped it on the G14. So, if you want a gaming notebook that gets the absolute best performance out of the 5080 you'd need to look elsewhere, but obviously this is quite good performance for a compact and thin notebook and the performance delta vs the 4070 model is substantial.
How does the build quality of these compare to macbook pro?
Incredible specs compared to the equivalent priced macbook
The build quality of these notebooks is about as good as it gets in terms of gaming PCs. If you want a discrete GPU and high refresh rate VRR display I don't know of any machine with better build quality.
