If it is ground and quickly vacuum sealed in a can (with no Oxygen), it can stay fresh up to a year or longer.
If it is not ground, and put in a bag with a vent, the gases that are released pushes the air out and it stays fresher longer, but not as well as being vacuum sealed.
If it is roasted and ground and put put into a bag, it also releases gases that push out the Oxygen which keep it fresher longer. Whether it is whole bean or ground doesn't make that much of a difference.
A brand like Kicking Horse wants to feasibly bag the coffee as soon as it is roasted and ground so that they can get on to processing the next batch. Time is money and it also keeps the coffee fresher longer.

Kicking Horse Smart Ass is a medium roast ground coffee that gets praise for flavor, especially when bought on sale. The vacuum packed bag should hold up for a while after opening, but the 10 ounce size is smaller than it looks and the shrinkflation stands out next to a normal 1 pound bag. The main tradeoff is freshness, since pre ground coffee will not taste as fresh as beans ground right before brewing. A solid option if convenience matters more than peak freshness.
Common Questions (4)
Pre-ground coffee generally stales faster than whole bean because more surface area is exposed to oxygen. Vacuum-packed ground coffee can stay fresh for a few weeks after opening, but it usually won't taste as fresh as beans ground right before brewing.
Yes. The bag looks like a normal 1 lb coffee bag, but it is actually 10 oz, so the deal price should be judged against the smaller size.
No. Some orders with 5 or more items do get the extra 15% off, but that discount does not apply to every Subscribe & Save order.
The Three Sisters blend is described as very good, while this Smart Ass medium roast and the dark roasts are not preferred by the same commenter. That makes Smart Ass a more specific taste choice rather than a universally favored Kicking Horse option.

Not true. The presence of Oxygen accelerates coffee going stale. Once whole green coffee is roasted, it immediately starts to deteriorate if left in the open. It becomes somewhat noticeable (you can taste the difference if you compare it to freshly roasted -- but it is not a bad taste ) after 2 to 3 weeks in the air. It continues to deteriorate and looses positive taste notes as time goes on. Any coffee you buy that is open to the air and then bagged for you is suspect, unless you know when it was roasted.
