If it is ground and quickly vacuum sealed in a can (with no Oxygen), it can stay fresh up to a year or longer.
If it is not ground, and put in a bag with a vent, the gases that are released pushes the air out and it stays fresher longer, but not as well as being vacuum sealed.
If it is roasted and ground and put put into a bag, it also releases gases that push out the Oxygen which keep it fresher longer. Whether it is whole bean or ground doesn't make that much of a difference.
A brand like Kicking Horse wants to feasibly bag the coffee as soon as it is roasted and ground so that they can get on to processing the next batch. Time is money and it also keeps the coffee fresher longer.

Not true. The presence of Oxygen accelerates coffee going stale. Once whole green coffee is roasted, it immediately starts to deteriorate if left in the open. It becomes somewhat noticeable (you can taste the difference if you compare it to freshly roasted -- but it is not a bad taste ) after 2 to 3 weeks in the air. It continues to deteriorate and looses positive taste notes as time goes on. Any coffee you buy that is open to the air and then bagged for you is suspect, unless you know when it was roasted.
