1/4" drive is actually safer when working with lower torque bolts that significantly reduces chances of snapping them off. It's also lighter causing less fatigue.

I agree with more $49 tools, but 1/4" drive on this thing makes it essentially worthless. I opted for the 1/2" version:

A 1/4" drive impact is a very different tool with very different uses than a 1/2" drive impact. They are not interchangeable. You would use a 1/4" drive on most hardware inside an engine bay, whereas a 1/2" drive is used for things like suspension and wheel lugs. Using a 1/2" impact on M6 or M8 bolts/studs is a great way to turn a 5 minute job into an all-day ordeal due to shearing off the fastener.

$49 for a 1/4" impact is a great deal and I'm in.

It'll be a trade on using a 3/8" ratchet or impact driver vs a 1/4" wrench

Ok, maybe I need to be educated.

I don't see why I would use a 1/4" impact wrench instead of a 1/4" impact driver. I think a driver would be much more versatile.

I already have an impact driver, hence why I opted for the 1/2" wrench.

a few weeks ago this was on sale for $79 with the 4ah highoutput battery. Lowes is having a hard time selling the 1/4". if you are not in a rush, that deal may come back again

You're correct, as they both are interchangeable. Just that if you're using sockets, this 1/4 square driver would be more secure in hard to reach places. For $49, makes sense to have both.

Most of these kobalt tools have power settings on them so that is a moot point. 1/2" impact sockets are kind of long and bulky, but 1/4"? Most people I know don't have a large selection of 1/4" sockets. 3/8" would be more practical. Plus I believe that the 3/8" version of this has a little bit more torque so you could probably use it for a few other things.
Edit: Personally, this [lowes.com] is the 3/8" impact I'm looking for a deal on (right angle impact). There was a deal that Lowes had early last year where you bought that two battery kit (4.0 & 2.0ah, charger, and toolbox) for $100 and this was one of the selections. I slept on it and it was gone and when that deal came around again in the middle of last year, they didn't have that tool as an option. I did end up getting two of those starter kit deals though last summer - an oscillating cut tool and a fan. I believe the SDS hammer drill was included as one of those free tools but haven't seen a deal on that since either. Lowes/Kobalt has been sucking on the deals this past year compared to all the ryobi ones I've seen.

I bought that 3/8 like 3 years ago. It's so long I can never find a chance to use it . I'm no mechanic but I do all maintenance and fix anything that needs fix on my cars ,trailers, golf carts , mowers . Suspension , starters , exhaust , spark plugs etc . Just no real place to use that thing . One day it will come in handy I just know it
