In those situations reliability and waterproof rating can literally be life or death.
That being said, I'm not very familiar with the quality of either Baofeng or Uniden for marine electronics, which is what I do for a living, but I have a generally more favorable view of Uniden as a brand overall.
Standard Horizon and Icom are the typical main brands for handheld VHF radios. But there's an argument to be made for lower priced brands as Uniden or Baofeng, either used as a backup, or for redundancy, since you might be able to get 2 or 3 for the same price as the main brands. Or that it's better to have one of those, than nothing at all, if the price point makes that difference.
Also having 2 cheaper ones where one is always charged, would be better, than a top of the line model with no battery left, because you used it all day...
