VHF is the main communication used in any offshore emergency situation. This handheld type of radio would be what you'd be likely to have in your ditch bag, which is what you'd grab if jumping in your life raft or dinghy from a sinking boat, or attached to yourself/life jacket, if falling/jumping overboard.

In those situations reliability and waterproof rating can literally be life or death.

That being said, I'm not very familiar with the quality of either Baofeng or Uniden for marine electronics, which is what I do for a living, but I have a generally more favorable view of Uniden as a brand overall.

Standard Horizon and Icom are the typical main brands for handheld VHF radios. But there's an argument to be made for lower priced brands as Uniden or Baofeng, either used as a backup, or for redundancy, since you might be able to get 2 or 3 for the same price as the main brands. Or that it's better to have one of those, than nothing at all, if the price point makes that difference.

Also having 2 cheaper ones where one is always charged, would be better, than a top of the line model with no battery left, because you used it all day...

Most Baofeng radios are VHF + UHF for licensed amateur use. Most (all?) of them do not have an IPX8 rating. This one seems to be intended for maritime use and is VHF-only. As @VikingSailor explains, this may be a good deal for certain applications, but for general use, the Baofengs may provide more functionality and bang for the buck.
