it's not backlit, as I assumed it was from the photos: it's a (dim) light that shines onto black plastic cutouts that slide in front of a white plastic sheet.

Was looking at these in the warehouse. The problem is, many houses have some sort of awning/soffit above front door, so the solar is likely not to work well due to shading.

If you don't have shading problems, this is a solid product.

Got this a couple months ago, very visible and stays lit all night (so far, summer is not the challenge)

Pleased with purchase so far.

Seems odd to me that so many others online only have room for 4 digits and I needed 5.

I bought this 3 weeks ago in the store. It worked great until 3 nights ago. Now, it won't light up. I'm returning (possibly replacing, if they still have them in stock).

It did look great at night when it worked, not dim at all, hopefully I just got a dud.

Did you follow the instructions and fully charge the device using the USB cable before using it for the first time?

Absolutely. After fully charged, I installed it, it got lots of sun. As I said, I had it installed for about 3 weeks. Funny thing, I took it down and disassembled it. When I put it back into the box, it lit up!

I bought it when it was this price in store. I liked it but I ended up returning it because it was TOO bright. I too would have preferred back-lit, but this is by no means "dim."
