Please don't saddle children with crapware. A lot of these cheap watches require some sussy apps and accounts. Get an old Apple Watch from Swappa.

This does sound like an easy way to give your data to another company. I wouldn't download their app, especially if it wasn't from the play store or apple store. Spyware is a thing, these devices could be infecting your whole network by just connecting your watch to your wifi.

I can't tell if people who say they want a Chinese Apple Watch knock off are spam bots or poor boomers who are getting tricked. Either way, BUYER BEWARE

I got one for my daughter. It looks smart, but it's sort of basic.

Giving it to Apple/Google/Samsung is better?

Actually, yeah, much better. Their apps are official and checked for spyware and any malicious activity. The Chinese app you side load, just so it can track your steps is potentially much worse. Run your smart watch through a through a hotspot on your PC. Run Wireshark and see the info it's sending. There is a much higher chance the $17 no name Chinese watch is just after your data and doesn't care about your privacy.

Apple and Samsung have rules and regulations on how they get your data and what they can do with it. In theory, it makes it much safer.

The app had regular discrete ads, but now they're intrusive and fullscreen.

This watch uses the VeryFit app which you get from the Apple store or Play Store.

No, I have one of these watches and I have had an apple watch 3 before. The biggest difference is an apple watch (and I guess the fancy Google and galaxy ones too) have WiFi. You'd think it doesn't matter but it means you are not completely reliant on Bluetooth connection with the phone which makes a huge difference. Suddenly the watch can now keep its time synced and updated on its own maybe even get notifications directly from Apple push notification or Google firebase or whatever. You are no longer a parasite suckling on the phone battery that the phone ROM has to fight against and it is a constant war. The phone and the watch work together instead of squabbling all day.
