Great price -- it beats Apple EDU pricing by a few hundred, but it's also probably the best evidence the Mac "Ultra" is coming next month not next year. Only question is what chip the Ultra will have w/ so many rumors the M6 Max will never be. Tough decision for those in the 16" market. Fortunately I'm a 14" guy so I don't have to gnash my teeth. I really want that touch screen.

lol.. a mac studio with these specs runs $4300. Might as well get a fully portable & phenomenal laptop while you're at it.

I have an M5 Max MBP - it's an absolute beast of a machine, and I love it. Crazy efficient, too. Sips just 4-5W of power driving two ~4K displays while my desktop PC guzzles more like 100-120W doing the same thing.

I think if you're serious about AI work, this level of machine is kind of where you want to be, even if you offload serious tasks to frontier models, which you probably should.But there are things that you still need and want to run locally to supplement frontier models. Your memory search will need a small model locally. You'll want something to parse audio and video recordings locally.128GB is probably overkill for that and 36GB is just a tad not enough. 48-64GB probably the sweet spot there so this is a fantastic price.

No, I'd just get a low end model and Claude subscription, I code and they can do a lot of work for $100/month. At the current price atleast 3 years and by that this this Mac will be an older model and we will have m8 pro in the market. There is literally no reason spend 5k to run a local llm. I'm hoping to get a pro for 12-1500 this thanksgiving and that's enough for me. I missed the recent Costco deal guh

Does the 14" have worse performance than the 16" for extended runs due to cooling, and shorter batterly life?

ai slop hallucination pumpers said that the engine matters more than efficiency. so your 5w is not as great as their 1000000w ai chip. lmao.

anyway thats arm chip design combined with unix efficiency. for most non techies they wont understand and want ai bubble slop.
anyway i wont pay this amt for the extra i dont need at all.

16 gb is all i need for the next 10 yrs gaming is dead due to ai slop and hallucinations displacing gamers as nvda becomes hated by the community. the ai investors can buy up the compute no one wants now.
