The ZenBook A16 stands out as a fast, premium Windows on ARM laptop with a 3K OLED 120 hertz touch display, 48 gigabytes of RAM, and very strong battery life. The Snapdragon X2E94100 feels snappy in everyday use, runs quietly, and can deliver around 10 hours of real work. App compatibility is much better than early ARM fears suggested, but specific programs, some games, and a few utilities still fail or need workarounds. Open box warranty handling and the single M.2 storage slot are the main cautions, though the machine still looks like a capable travel and productivity pick.

Common Questions (5)

  • Most common productivity apps now run natively on Windows on ARM, and many others can run through emulation. Specific holdouts can still fail, so it is worth checking the exact apps you need before buying.

  • Yes. The SSD appears to be a single M.2 2280 drive, and users have upgraded it to larger drives such as a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. Cloning can be tricky on this ARM model, and Hasleo Backup Suite is the tool most often recommended for a working clone.

  • Open-box warranty coverage can be risky: ASUS may not reset the warranty, and coverage may depend on whether the unit was previously registered or how Best Buy handled the receipt. Buying new avoids that uncertainty and gives the full 1-year ASUS warranty.

  • It is not a strong gaming choice, with reports of DRM failures, crashes, and very low frame rates in some games. Linux support is still developing, so Windows or WSL is the safer option if you need a development machine.

  • Real-world battery life can reach about 10 hours of normal work use, which is far better than older x86 laptops that were limited to around 3 hours. The Snapdragon platform is also described as very power efficient for most users.

Is this a touchscreen? One of the videos I watched said it wasn't.
This specific model does have a touchscreen.

you'd be surprised about just how many systems run windows arm on the business side of things. microsoft has been making software for arm for a long time now. arm is actually a better architecture.

also i think we are starting to see a crossroads of choosing to eat and get gas vs buy things you want. things are getting more expensive and less people can afford. we are kinda f'd.
Just imagine, you are one of just a few figuring this out. Good for you but we have a long way to go. Smilie

I would definitely return and rebuy new because you basically get little to no ASUS warranty on an open box and BB won't give you anything either unless you're a Total member, but even then you have to pay a deductible. RETURN IT and get a brand new one with a full 1YR ASUS warranty.
Can you elaborate please on the warranty on open box ones? I was planning on getting the open box one with me to abroad in Europe (where I live for the time being). ASUS normally has an international warranty in these, so it didn't even cross my mind anything would be a problem at all. Is the issue with asking ASUS ton reset the warranty if the device was activated already?

You're only focusing on this particular SKU's pricing and making a generalized assumption that sales must suck because of it. Here's the other reality, the same model of the A16 but with 1TB (the one I have) was introduced at $1599. Then, it was RAISED to $1699. And right now, that 1TB model is now $1999.99. That is a $400 price increase over when it was released. So be careful what assumptions you claim.

With that said, my guess is the 512GB config isn't selling well at $1900 when you can get the 1TB version for $100 more. So Best Buy is putting their inventory on sale. To back that up, the 1TB version goes in and out of stock often. Maybe it's a better seller than you think.

In any case, it's a blessing in disguise to get people on the Windows ARM bandwagon. Given them a ridiculously fast and feature-filled laptop for $1000 less than a similar Intel unit. Brilliant.
does the 1TB stock come back? when was the last time it came back?

If you're going to clone to a larger SSD (I used a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB), I would recommend using Hasleo Backup Suite and do the cloning live in Windows (not from a bootable portable USB drive). Being ARM is a little different than doing it on an Intel Windows laptop. This ASUS has 16 partitions on the SSD. Hasleo is the only one I could get working as it should. Macrium works but marks the wrong partition as the boot so the target SSD doesn't boot. You can fix it with a some commands to mark the correct partition. Search with Google as there is a reddit thread how to fix it.
Hi, glad to see you again. Please elaborate some more. You cloned the A16 source drive to a target drive in an external enclosure? How did you get passed the Hasleo error 'failed to take snapshot'?

The short story is ASUS will not reset the warranty. You need to check the warranty status with ASUS online when you get your open box. I got lucky with mine -- it had not been registered so I got the full 1 YR from ASUS. If it has been registered by the previous owner, you get whatever is left of the original year. If, somehow, the laptop is older than a year (not the case here since these are a new-ish model) you get no warranty.

But the fact these are relatively new, there should be at least 6 months if not more left on the warranty or maybe you get lucky and get the whole year, like me.

One thing you need to double-check is if purchases from BestBuy have an international warranty. As it is, even if you have warranty, you have to go through Best Buy to get it repaired -- they will send it to ASUS. Been there, done that with Zenbook S16.

The LG Ultra 7 355 CPU is a decent CPU, but LG is known for throttling their CPU because of the thin profile. Lenovo Slim 7i got a mixed review on Costco. But both of them don't even hold a candle if you look at Geekbench numbers. If this works for your work requirement and budget (~$1500 including tax), then go for it.

Costco is known for 90-day hassle-free returns, and Best Buy only has 15 days. I hope this deal returns in the first week of November, especially since Best Buy has extended the return period until January 15th for regular customers. Also don't have a lot of faith in ASUS warranty claims and support in general.

Check out this deal, and the only grip is 16GB RAM... otherwise, it's a top-notch machine from Acer.

Lenovo is a Chinese brand and obviously affiliated with CCP for those that care about that. I personally avoid it.

That said, good informative post!

Is every Chinese brand of everything affiliated with CCP according to you?

That's literally what the CCP expects of Chinese companies (and much more) and they don't try to hide it.

On Reddit users have reported that Asus goes by thr BB receipt. Not whether previous owner registered the laptop or not. And Asus only gives 90 day warranty from your BB open box purchase receipt. Was your experience different? Even if you were able to get a full year because the previous owner didn't register warranty, your BB receipt will state that it is open box.

I registered my open box A16 on Asus site and it gave me the full year. I have not needed to repair my A16 so I only have that to go on.
Either way, it's pretty shady. I've bought Lenovo open box that was out of Lenovo warranty and they reset it for me for a whole year.
