The ZenBook A16 stands out as a fast, premium Windows on ARM laptop with a 3K OLED 120 hertz touch display, 48 gigabytes of RAM, and very strong battery life. The Snapdragon X2E94100 feels snappy in everyday use, runs quietly, and can deliver around 10 hours of real work. App compatibility is much better than early ARM fears suggested, but specific programs, some games, and a few utilities still fail or need workarounds. Open box warranty handling and the single M.2 storage slot are the main cautions, though the machine still looks like a capable travel and productivity pick.

  • Windows on ARM can feel very snappy, with strong responsiveness attributed to memory bandwidth.

  • The system can support corporate checkpoint VPN and can run many common productivity apps.

  • The laptop can deliver around ten hours of real-world usage on normal work without gaming.

  • The OLED display can look glossy and MacBook-like, with an anti-reflection coating that reduces glare.

  • Some programs may not work on Windows on ARM, creating compatibility risk for specific app needs.

  • Open-box units can have limited or non-reset ASUS warranty coverage, and repairs may require going through Best Buy.

  • Heat experience can be mixed, and overheating complaints can be enough to make some shoppers avoid the model.

  • SSD expansion can be constrained because the laptop reportedly has only one M.2 slot.

Check who you are replying to. I don't avoid anything, I don't actually care one bit. but that doesn't change the facts of CCP well documented involvement with chinese businesses.
Apologies for confusing the reply.

I agree with you and I don't care one bit either, but my point stands that if someone boycotts Lenovo because they're CCP then do you boycott all Chinese companies (if, as is being inferred, they are all connected to CCP)?

Oh wow. That's actually crazy and you're right:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/com...e_bestbuy/

Those ASUS laptops sold at BestBuy have their own SKUs and ASUS does not handle them directly. It's been known already that this particular A16 has had differences compared to their regular A16, but I did not expect this would affect the warranty, as it does with other ASUSes at BestBuy.

Thanks for the heads up! This is why ASUS has such a bad reputation for customer service. They're basically the exact opposite of Apple — and I am not an Apple fanboy.
One reason I try to avoid ASUS laptops (even at Costco) is because of their bad reputation, and Reddit is full of posts where people got denied even during warranty periods. That said, every laptop company has issues, but everyone has a bad and good experience. All in all, one should never need repair under warranty, and a laptop that works as advertised is an ideal situation.

I have the prior generation, X1 32gb version. Pretty solid machine overall. Minor nitpick is that I wish the keyboard texture was a bit different, maybe more like the Surface laptop's. Keyboard quality overall is passable but still below what you get with say a Macbook or Surface. And the touchpad is a regular "diving board" one, not a glass force touchpad like you see on Macs and Surfaces. But the fan curve is pretty well tuned. Esp when it's in whisper mode, fans are usually pretty dang silent. I expect the X2 to do equally well in this department.

As for program compatibility, supports the basics like your usual browsers, Word/Outlook/Excel, and plenty of others outside the box. If you have as specific program that you're concerned might not be compatible, best bet is check before you buy. The compatibility FUD was largely overblown even at launch for the X1. I had to return a Zenbook with Intel's 258v Lunar Lake in it because the fans ran way too often and it really pumped out a lot of heat like none other.

compatibility. some programs just aren't going to work. i guess its come a long way and is still getting there but you'll have programs that just won't work. but i guess these cpu's are actually low battery usage beasts and should be fine for most.
Most apps now run natively. There's no need to run it via translation layer anymore. Even back in 2024, every single app I was throwing at it ran just fine via translation. Things have changed. Microsoft and Qualcomm really made sure Windows on ARM wasn't going anywhere.

I wonder how hard it is to recompile a program for ARM? I do have a couple holdouts that seemingly are just too lazy to recompile their app for ARM. One is my go-to for screenshot archiving (Snag-IT by Techsmith) and the other is a Start menu replacement called StartAllBack. But apart from those, I do try to keep my A16 as native as possible. Asus ships some app called Glide that is x86 code on the A16. Not sure if I need it or not as I'd rather just uninstall it.

Hilarious that Google is selling their Googlebook close to this price with lesser specs.
To be fair, Google isn't selling them. The manufacturers like Asus are. There are no Google-made Googlebooks (dumb name BTW). So, Asus is competing with itself.

I don't know why you want to be technical. Google doesn't make their Pixel phones, Foxconn manufactures them (I think), but no one is saying Google doesn't sell phones. And these laptops are available in the Google Store so I'm not sure what you're trying to get at other than a technicality.

So, Google gets a commission from selling them in their store. They also get licensing fees from these manufacturers. Similar to how Microsoft makes money from Windows licenses. They also sell devices from other manufacturers in their store along with their own Surface line. However, the biggest difference is that there are no Google Googlebooks. At the end of the day, manufacturers will make the most money from selling these things.

I have never used a Snapdragon / ARM based system. What could be a few things one should be aware off?
Linux is still at "we promise, honestly!" stage. If you plan do use it for development, is either Windows or WSL.

Isn't it?Google says about Linux on the A16:Current Linux Status• Mainline Patches: Qualcomm engineers have submitted patch series to the Linux kernel to support booting and running the ARM-based Zenbook A16.• Working Features: Basic hardware features like the display, GPU, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and input devices function with ongoing development.• New EC Driver: A recent asus-glymur-ec driver reported by Phoronix adds fan speed monitoring, temperature readouts, keyboard backlight control, and suspend/resume support.I'm not a Linux person but it sounds like it mostly works with development of support continuing.
There is a world of difference between "engineers working on Snapdragon support" and a functional distro, that you can install on this laptop and which will support all its hardware.
