Community Reviews
Dungeon Crawler Carl is a funny, game-heavy litRPG that shines most for readers who like RPGs, D and D style worlds, and audiobook narration. The series gets praise for Jeff Hayes, strong character voices, and a story that grows more complex and surprising after the early mechanics-heavy setup. The paperback is mainly appealing for physical ownership, while Kindle Unlimited, the audiobook, or the author's Patreon can be cheaper ways in. Early chapters can feel repetitive or tedious, and the humor and game references are not for everyone.
Common Questions (5)
The audiobook format is widely favored because Jeff Hayes' narration and character voices add a lot, and some say the series is better listened to than read. The paperback is mainly worth it if you specifically want a physical copy; otherwise Kindle Unlimited or audio is the more practical way to get into the series.
The early books lean heavily on RPG mechanics, loot, leveling, and repeated dungeon-fight structure, which can feel tedious or repetitive. Later books are described as building a larger story arc and revealing more behind the scenes, with several readers saying the series improves around books 4-5.
The series is available to read with an active Kindle Unlimited membership, and one commenter says a 2-month free KU trial covered books through 7. If you want to avoid Amazon, Matt Dinniman's Patreon reportedly offers ebook downloads for $5/month, though the books are otherwise Amazon-exclusive.
Readers mention being on books 6, 7, and 8, and the series is expected to end after two more books. That means it is still ongoing, with the final stretch not yet released.
No-this series is not kid-friendly. It includes adult humor, game and internet culture references, and content that several readers describe as juvenile or not suitable for younger readers.

What's shocked me most is how characters that I thought were absolutely throwaway (a reanimated sex doll head....really?) turned out to be some of my favorites.
I've read all 8 books and am eagerly awaiting the final (two?) to finish out the story.
HI ZEV!

Unfortunately, it's a 6x8" format and some of the text is just too small to be easily read.
It's much easier to read on Webtoons.
I would have given up too had I not heard from so many people that it's a great series. Maybe keep that in mind if you're out of other stuff to read/listen to in the future.
i fully admit to being an outlier, heard from lots of family and friends that I just HAD to read it, or better yet listen to the audiobooks.
I also found the first half or so of Book 1 tedious. It takes SO LONG to describe how to play an RPG versus just playing one. But the story really does get a whole lot better after that. We don't know how it'll end, but maybe try the audiobooks narrated by Jeff Hayes - he does a really amazing job with the voices, and the story moves along well after you get over that RPG 101 hump.

Overall I don't regret reading book one but also I don't feel like it brings anything new to continue with second. A good read if you want something lightweight and funny, probably the best representation of litRPG genre if that's your thing. Paperback could be an overkill because it did not seem like a book anyone would read more than once.

Seems like we get burned by every book adaptation, but I'm still holding on to that last frayed thread of hope. Please, please Macfarlane, don't F this up!!
You can absolutely label me a Macfarlane hater though. He'll F this up 6 ways from Sunday, no doubt about it.
Great imagination and excellent deployment in writing and we'll executed on Audible.
It's a shame Amazon owns Audible now and holds these authors...
Either way...
I support the author through purchases and word of mouth!
Executive Producers: Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, Rachel Hargreaves-Heald, Chris Yost, and author Matt Dinniman.
The Dungeon Crawler Carl live-action television adaptation has been officially greenlit and given a straight-to-series order at Peacock.

Unserious? Anything Pratchett, a handful of Gaiman, The Landover series was fun, etc.
