Dungeon Crawler Carl is a funny, game-heavy litRPG that shines most for readers who like RPGs, D and D style worlds, and audiobook narration. The series gets praise for Jeff Hayes, strong character voices, and a story that grows more complex and surprising after the early mechanics-heavy setup. The paperback is mainly appealing for physical ownership, while Kindle Unlimited, the audiobook, or the author's Patreon can be cheaper ways in. Early chapters can feel repetitive or tedious, and the humor and game references are not for everyone.

OK, 47 male here. Enjoy sci-fi and space opera. Started this expecting to it to be low-brow toilet humor, and while there's plenty of that, the overall character development, world-building, and story arcs are surprisingly complex and satisfying. I actually got a lump in my throat at a few places (although there are some sections that turned into a bit of a slog).

What's shocked me most is how characters that I thought were absolutely throwaway (a reanimated sex doll head....really?) turned out to be some of my favorites.

I've read all 8 books and am eagerly awaiting the final (two?) to finish out the story.

HI ZEV!

FYI, there's also a free comic version of Dungeon Crawler Carl on Webtoon:

There's also a printed version of the same comic.
Unfortunately, it's a 6x8" format and some of the text is just too small to be easily read.
It's much easier to read on Webtoons.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Wouldn't surprise me to hear that ChatGPT wrote it as it's literally, 'make aliens rewrite the laws of the universe to replace reality with a tropey video game setting, add a bunch of one-note characters, and be sure to include every bad gaming cliche (loot boxes, micro transactions, intrusive ads, etc).
I also found the first half or so of Book 1 tedious. It takes SO LONG to describe how to play an RPG versus just playing one. But the story really does get a whole lot better after that. We don't know how it'll end, but maybe try the audiobooks narrated by Jeff Hayes - he does a really amazing job with the voices, and the story moves along well after you get over that RPG 101 hump.
I would have given up too had I not heard from so many people that it's a great series. Maybe keep that in mind if you're out of other stuff to read/listen to in the future.

i bought all the audiobooks last time this was a deal. been hearing the hype for so long. got halfway through the first book and gave up. it's just a guy narrating a video game. funny for a little while, then its just repetitive. guess this is aimed at the younger generation.

i fully admit to being an outlier, heard from lots of family and friends that I just HAD to read it, or better yet listen to the audiobooks.
Shoot replied to the wrong poster - posting again for you:

such an amazing series! I'm listening to it on Audible narrated by the goat Jeff Hayes, just finished book 4. fyi, there are websites out there that sell audible credits for about $5-6 a credit if you buy a pack. I did that cuz I can't get any usable audible promos anymore. great way to listen for much cheaper. message me if you're interested and i'll send you the info.
Hi, yes I'm interested. Can you share the information with me please and thank you.

I've read it by friend's recommendation. Was a very easy read - very few characters and not much story, so I could read couple of pages and return back at any time without losing context. Felt like reading a let's play.
Overall I don't regret reading book one but also I don't feel like it brings anything new to continue with second. A good read if you want something lightweight and funny, probably the best representation of litRPG genre if that's your thing. Paperback could be an overkill because it did not seem like a book anyone would read more than once.

Which audiobook version? I think there is a more basic version, and then a more elaborate one with sound effects. (I looked this up a few weeks ago, but forgot the details.)
They're both good. The same VA is behind them both, but in the "audio immersion tunnel" edition they add in everything else like it's an old radio program. In that they have a ton of guest VAs as well. But people fell in love with the basic audio book on audible. The main character's voice changes in the second and third book pretty big from the first. So the VA behind it hates their first one and says the tunnel is much improved, but that could just be the an artist not liking their previous pieces before growth or marketing for their $30.00 audio tape that is not available on Amazon. I got the DCC audiobooks for around .99 to 9.99 with sales, discounts, and credits.

Even though I see a Jeff Hayes hater here in the thread, this is imo a benchmark example of an audiobook narrator elevating the already great material. I can't imagine how it could be better.

Seems like we get burned by every book adaptation, but I'm still holding on to that last frayed thread of hope. Please, please Macfarlane, don't F this up!!
Since I'm the only one who came even close to critiquing Jeff Hayes in the thread I'll assume this was aimed at me. I'm certainly not a hater, as this guy does great work and to be able to do that many unique voices takes incredible talent. I just don't agree with his interpretation of Donut, but obviously the author did or he wouldn't have chose him for the work. But it would also be mostly impossible for a male narrator to produce the version of Donut that I hear in my head when reading. It's a personal preference, and I need to avoid his version until I finish reading the series so I can continue with the version of Donut that I have.

You can absolutely label me a Macfarlane hater though. He'll F this up 6 ways from Sunday, no doubt about it.

I wanna say I thought this series was gonna be shallow meme fodder garbage and I was so so so wrong. I started it and I haven't been able to stop, and it keeps surprising me in every book. I think this is the most pleasantly surprised I've ever been with any media franchise. I very much judged a book by its cover (not literally I guess, the cover art is pretty rad) and I'm sad I waited so long because it's great.

Awesome author and series!

Great imagination and excellent deployment in writing and we'll executed on Audible.

It's a shame Amazon owns Audible now and holds these authors...

Either way...
I support the author through purchases and word of mouth!

Oh yeah... There's also a TV show incoming!

Executive Producers: Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, Rachel Hargreaves-Heald, Chris Yost, and author Matt Dinniman.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl live-action television adaptation has been officially greenlit and given a straight-to-series order at Peacock.

Hardly a good judge of the series if you've only read one book? Book 1 is just the tip of the iceberg.

What is a good story in your opinion then?
Serious books? LOTR, the first 3 or 4 Shannaras, The Stormlight Archive, The Expanse novels (only read the first 3), Wool/Shift/Dust, PHM, etc.

Unserious? Anything Pratchett, a handful of Gaiman, The Landover series was fun, etc.

Currently reading: Breakfast of Champions
