China spies less on their citizens then the West now. That's why they don't use it as a "bad" example anymore. Even what they do use they go after large and organized crime. Not individuals doing petty stuff or simple mistakes. China isn't great either, but it was the fear example before. Now it's actually more freedom in many regards including higher happiness in surveys.

Yeah. Don't be a criminal and go to prison in China. They actually have a justice system. The US only has a legal system with the outcome usually going to the highest payer.

You don't even have to be rich to avoid jail in the US anymore. Just look at all the "dropping crime rates" which is just code for "we don't charge criminals with crimes anymore" so it appears like crime is dropping.
