This appears to go in and out of stock at Best Buy; have seen it come in and out of stock 3 times in the past 3 days. Don't have one, but depending on condition, could be a good get on a full wattage (175W for laptops) 5090.

It can be okay these days. Cooling technology has improved a lot, and cooling is also a function of physical size, which an 18" has a decent bit of. I mean sure it will get hot under load, but it shouldn't cook itself if Acer remotely built it right.

I have a 16" Acer Helios with a 5070 Ti. It definitely runs on the hotter side under full load, but not a "this thing is going to melt" kind of hot. I also have a cooling pad, which I don't use all the time, but massively takes the edge off of the heat if I know I'm going to be running an AI model or something like that.

Yeah, and that extra 2 inches and the (likely) extra thickness/weight should help it all run cooler than otherwise as well.

FYI for anyone looking to do local LLMs, the laptop 5090 has half the memory bandwidth of the desktop 5090, so the RAM difference is more than just the 8GB (32 vs. 24) of space.

All B.S aside, these mobile 5090s generate enough heat to warm up a small bedroom; perfect for winter, terrible in summer.
