These come with awful M.2 SATA SSD. Replaced it with an entry level NVMe SSD, and added 8GB of RAM and it runs fine for a basic YouTube watching system even with Windows. But these are unusable with the stock SSD, event with Linux.

How is that possible? I've never seen an unusable ssd

Back in they day they would use "eMMC SSDs" that were slower then an SD card.
Nowadays you just put this "Go Fatu" brand SSD that has no ram on it.

I got one, largely because of dual 2.5gb Ethernet and I needed a replacement mini server. As someone else said, 256 sata ssd is very slow, replaced it immediately. Ram is also really slow (1700!). I had a nvme drive and 2 sticks of 3200 ram and the device runs well. Note that the ssd actually has a legit copy of windows pro! I cloned that sata ssd into the nvme to use that licensed copy. If you know what you are getting into and have the right replacement parts, this is an ok device, it's much faster than the n150 or n100 machines that are priced higher in these ram/storage inflates era.

You actually don't need to clone the drive, its loaded into the BIOS, I installed a brand new fresh copy of Windows Pro from MS and it picked up the key. I would highly recommend wiping and starting over as you never know what was loaded on by them. But I can attest it seems to be a decent machine, I recently got 2gig internet so I'm looking to test out the 2.5 ethernet Smilie

Anyone tried PFSense with this? I'm guessing slow SSD and 8GB is fine for 4 person residential firewall to handle 1gb Fios. .

I had an EeePc that had some of the very first SSDs in it.

It was an SSD that couldn't write and read at the same time. So Windows was CONSTANTLY having these blips and pauses. And god save you if you were trying to install anything.

I ordered it to use with OPNsense, 8GB is more than enough for both if you're running them bare metal. The only downside is that it uses a Realtek RTL8125 controller so need to install the realtek-re-kmod and there's a similar thing for OPNsense.

yep i remember those, you had to watch out for 'eMMC SSD'.
they were basically cheap low quality SD cards like Level 2 ones.

they also have the 5400u E5 Plus for the same price with no coupon. It's a bit faster with twice the L3 cache, otherwise seems identical. EDIT: Never mind, they jacked the price up a few days after I posted this. You can see it in the price history; perhaps it will drop again someday.

The answer to the question I was going to ask. Looking for similar with Intel nics. I'll wait...
