My guess is that quality control is lacking compared to the big brands like Vic Firth or Vater.
I know this is cheap, but I wouldn't buy these as a gift since drumstick choice is very more personal than you might expect.

I have some ebony drumsticks from my dad. My mom wrote a note and wrapped it around them. Says "used in the Crimean War". There's also a much longer set of sticks stamped Ludwig 1B. Youngest son has called dibs.
