Yeah, you're (most likely) talking about things like the Ionic breeze (OLD school sharper image air purifier that uses steel plates to generate negative ions that in testing is demonstrably very poor at actually cleaning the air, require *very* frequent disassembly for cleaning, and tend to generate more ozone than the plasma wave function of Winix air filters that people here frequently bitch about which is why it and items like it weren't available in California from about the 2010s on.) But again, you do you. Just keep in mind anything that claims to filter the air without an actual filter is arguably a scam. Modern air filters (like this unit) have a washable pre-filter because it catches hair, dust, and the like which can be easily washed out, but you can *not* easily wash out any filter that filters the air of smoke, germs, and anything measured in microns - (Hepa filters out tiny, microscopic particles down to 0.3 microns, including pollen, mold spores, pet dander, dust mite debris, etc.) So yes, you can have a perm air filter that filters human/pet hair as well as dust and requires frequent cleaning, but it's not really going to help you against the normal things people buy air filters for, there are of course exceptions but they are ridiculously expensive and require special cleaning.)

Edit: there are affordable items like the honeywell HFD320 that supposedly doesn't need a replacement MAIN filter, but they still require pre-filter changes about every quarter, are generally much more expensive than comparable models, have smaller range, and have a lower usability over time since you can't really completely clean the filter which is not covered by warranty (https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurif...s_5_query/ is one discussion of it, again what i'm saying is the end user will be *much* better served just buying a standard filter with easily sourced replacements and replacing them regularly, I quite like my honeywell HPA units as the replacement hepa filters are about ~$4 each in bulk from 3rd party mfgs- depending on room size you'll need 1-3 per unit per year and they have worked perfectly during wildfire season in my incredibly unsealed 1970s house in the heart of the PNW, the prefilters are standard carbon and likewise inexpensive - and can be vacuumed if that's your thing.)

Honestly it depends if you only want to have clean air for a year sure but the things that don't require filter replacements except for every X years generally do not work well after the first year, I want to say most of them experience a drop of 10 to 20% reduction per year in their cadr. Basically if you want clean air you need to change your filters - for people who won't do the quarter/half year replacement reliably I would suggest something like the Winix round all in one filter that you replace yearly. But I'm not your parent 🤷

I thought that the ones that dont require filters would probably just have something that is cleanable. Maybe not as great as a replaceable filter but not terrible either.

I use a similar model, I typically on low (it's on auto). The purifier is fairly quiet, but does make some noise. The big thing is the rating for the amount of air it can process or square foot coverage is based on the unit running at max speed, which in my opinion is fairly loud.

They just don't work. There's a reason a furnace will always have a filter. Same with a room air purifier.

Mine has been going 10 years strong. I originally used it for a baby room and now it's my kitchen functioning as an exhaust. Not the filter's intended purpose I know but the thing keeps going. I've opened it up a few times to clean off grease. Auto odor detection works great.

You can get non-OEM Hepa and carbon filters.
