I prefer these for any yard under an acre. So easy to deliver fert exactly where you want it. Yes you have to fill them up more often, but push spreaders are such a pain in the ass.

I just bought an off brand one same price from walmart.com the other day. - This is a good price for a Scotts branded one. I use the handcrank version since I moved to a house with a smaller yard. I use it monthly for insecticide granules.

I had the battery one. Corroded in the housing and was useless after 1 season. Rather have manual crank with less things to worry about. Grab and go.

I'll pull the battery out of mine when i'm not using it. Couldn't clean it with vinegar?

to confirm, you can use this for fertilizer? I thought it might be only big enough for seeds to pass through

Yes you can use with fertilizer. There is a dial by the handle to select the size of the opening for dispersion.

That's perfect then. All this summer heat has destroyed my grass. Some places need new seed, and others more fertilizer.

Why are push spreaders worse than this?

The wrist/forearm support is key. Have one from Expert Gardener without the added support and it becomes an actual pain after a while. I don't even have much lawn.

It's not recommended for spreading insecticide or fertilizer since it's closer to the face, but I might try it with a mask on. I have a small yard.

They turn with the rotation of the wheels, which are often cheap wheels that don't always make good contact with the ground, especially as the hopper gets low on whatever you're dispersing. Even worse if you aren't going in long, straight lines. That alone causes some uneven dispersion sometimes. Also, for me, the Scott's push spreader is uncomfortable to use because the handle is not very long and I'm about 6'3", so I'm hunching over the whole time. It's not the end of the world and it does throw seed and stuff well usually, but I've found these hand cranks to be a lot easier if you're just doing patch work. I originally got the push spreader when I needed to reseed a large area after having part of my property bulldozed to flatten it out, so it was good for that at least. Now I only use it for salting our driveway in the winter. Yes, it does clog sometimes if there are random larger pieces of salt.

Have one for years. The only thing about it is the mechanism gets stuck easily. Not sure if it's just mine.

Any good deal on grass fertilizer that can be used with this spreader? The grass turned brown/yellow with the summer heat.
