It's $13 dollars for the paperback, not the hardcover.

One of my favorite cookbooks is "How to Cook without a Book." Give it to anyone I know learning to cook. Teaches you the general structure of a ton of typical meals, and how to improvise a meal with whatever's on sale at the supermarket or going bad in the fridge. Each recipe family has a rhyme to let you remember how much and how long.

The previews for this book look way more like it's for someone who already knows how to cook. Very little direction on how to chop things, temperatures/times to cook, etc. "Make a teriyaki sauce with soy sauce cut with mirin" is not particularly instructive to those that need help learning how to make a sauce.

With that title I thought this was a book of just all the preamble they give you before getting to the recipe on most website. "My mom used to make this dish anytime I had gone through a bad break up..."

It doesn't have any fixed measurements. It doesn't say add 3 Tbsp of butter- it just says add a glob of butter. Its actually a cool concept that most people already use to a degree - add ingredients to your taste. Itll tell you to combine certain ingredients until the sauce is "salty-sweet", which is a different level for everyone.

I guess its like more scaleable? instead of having to do math at 9-10pm, you're like "i want this much meat for just myself" or something. Theres no 'serves 6' or whatever based on the few pages i looked at. you look at the picture for portions and it tells you the technique "sautee onions in the leftover grease from the bacon to make a sauce"

I received this book as a gift and never use it. I understand the concept, but how is this better than giving actual measurements. Obviously you can adjust up or down if you want to. Seems gimmicky.
