This Verizon Pixel 11 Pro deal is mainly about getting a heavily discounted flagship and then verifying carrier unlock after activation. The strongest upside is the low out of pocket price, with store pickup and immediate activation often leading to an unlocked phone that works with Google Fi, Mint, T Mobile, or other eSIMs. The main catch is Verizon's confusing unlock behavior, since some units stay locked for hours or days and the bootloader remains permanently locked. Cancellation usually needs chat or phone support, and full month bills or prorated charge adjustments can take follow up.

  • Shoppers planning to use Google Fi or another non-Verizon eSIM, because multiple reports say the phone works once carrier unlock is confirmed.

  • Buyers comfortable activating first and then canceling the line, because several reports show same-day cancellation with only prorated service charges.

  • In-store pickup buyers who want the safest unlock path, because pickup reports repeatedly show the phone unlocking immediately after activation.

  • Pixel buyers who want a flagship Android with a clean OS and regular updates, because commenters say custom ROMs are unnecessary for everyday use.

  • Custom ROM enthusiasts who need an unlockable bootloader, because Verizon units are reported to keep the bootloader permanently locked.

  • Buyers expecting immediate carrier unlock from a shipped order, because shipped units are repeatedly reported as staying locked until later verification or a wait period.

  • People who need to move an existing eSIM quickly, because several reports say eSIM transfer can fail or require extra carrier steps even when the phone is unlocked.

  • Shoppers who cannot tolerate Verizon billing cleanup, because canceled lines can still generate full-month bills that require follow-up chat to correct.

  • Insert a Different SIM Card: Put a SIM or activate an eSIM from a different mobile carrier (for example, if your phone is from Verizon, try an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM). If the phone connects to the new network or makes a call, it is unlocked. If it shows an error or asks for an unlock code, it is locked. [1, 2, 3]
  • Check Manual Network Operators:
    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Tap Network & internet, then select SIMs.
    3. Choose your SIM card and turn the Automatically select network toggle to OFF.
    4. Search for available networks. If only one carrier appears, the phone is likely locked. If multiple carriers show up, it is typically unlocked. [1, 2]
I only have a xfinity postpaid phone plan currently which runs off verizon towers. I guess I can't use this esim to verify if the phone is unlocked because it's technically the same network. I also have some few year old cricket wireless sim (AT&T) but not sure if it "works" to check if the phone is unlocked. if none of those work, I guess I can try this bottom method.

Verizon devices have permanently locked bootloader which is a major issue (for some) as that kills any possibly of installing custom roms like lineage or graphene os (which is one of the usp of normal pixel devices)
To be honest, how many still install custom OS? For 95% of consumers, this is a null point.

you can insert physical sim into pixel 9. it's pixel 10 (US market) which does not have sim card slot.
the Pixel 10a does have a sim card slot.

Second method don't need extra eSIM to check

10a uses the pixel 9a Google Tensor G4 chipset so not really pixel 10 with Google Tensor G5

Placed order and it was cancelled. I definitely live within the Verizon coverage area. I called and they said it was a system error. They were willing to process a new order with the promo, however that would definitely mess up my CB (which seems to have dropped from $150 to $75). The CB might not work anyways since I plan to immediately cancel the line but I am stuck on what to do next...

"Unfortunately, due to a system error, we accepted your order for wireless service at an address currently outside the Verizon Mobile network. As a result, we canceled your order because we are unable to activate the service at this time."

You're paying for your spectrum cellular as part of your other spectrum products - whether it is "free" or not.And at 35 a month for a free truly unlocked hassle free phone you're at $700 for 2 years and this requires you to jump through hoops to have a Verizon branded device - and you're still at $500.
It's not $35, it more like $38 with all the charges and then for 24 month it comes out to be $912 which is not that of a discount about the retail price of $1099. You are also paying for a phone for 24 months which can be had significantly cheaper 6 months after the release.

If you want to do this with Fi the best way to do this is to become an existing customer with flexible plan and do the upfront discount of $500 or more for which you have to continue the line for 4 months. Your total cost would be around $660. But you should wait to start the process before black Friday to take advantage of the higher discount or combine Google store/play coupons with it. Early this year P10 Pro can be had from Fi for $299, see my post about that.

Store manager here. If you purchase any phone and get a promo on it, that promo is credited over 36 months. If you cancel before 36 months, you would be responsible for the remaining phone balance at the time of cancellation.
Guess you didn't read the memo from corporate.

You can get trial Google Fi line with esim and quickly check.

Because there wasn't one? Free phones are free over 36 months. Not up front. Period.

ok, but for the vast majority buying/using the phone it's not an issue.

Yeah it should be unlocked immediately. Bootloader locked means you cant install a custom Android OS on it.
But if you are going to use the phone in your regular routine life then why you should care about it ?

If you are not getting the phone for hacking on it, you shouldn't. You get a clean OS, regular update etc so no need to install custom ROMs unlike a long time ago when OEMs used to ship a ton of bloatware.

Was able to order one for store pickup but then it occurred to me that they might open it and activate on the Verizon sim while trying to force me to add pricey things. Would this negate it being unlocked somehow? It's been a minute since I hoarded, repaired and collected phones.
