Has the general design for pants changed in the past 10-20 years?

Hi
Not a fashion person, I generally wear t-shirts and slacks. Crocs every day since Covid (except for the one day I had to attend a funeral). LOL as I look around, almost all my clothes were purchased in the 90s or 2000s.
So I decided to get some new pants for the winter... got various brands... Eddie Bauer, Banana Republic, Gap, etc. But now its all online, so I bought without trying them on....
WTH??? The waist is OK and the length is too long, but that is normal. But... all my old pants go up above the hips. Not a lot, nothing like that TV character Urkel haha. But all of these new ones stop right around my hip bones vs a couple of inches above. Feels weird, they are in the wrong spot!
Is there something I missed when ordering? No, they are NOT the ones the rappers wear, where their purposefully expose their underwear. (Or exposed underwear is PART of the pants?!?) But low enough that they feel uncomfortable to me. Is there a design, a key word or a description I should look for when making future purchases?
