Yes, you get more surface area and less steaming of the meat which means better sear/maillard crispy deliciousness.

People aren't just making smashburgers because it's fun

That being said, the grooves in this one are stupid and will not work well for smashburgers

for this one, I thought it was because of the grooves and trying to mimic some bbq style grilling or that the grooves added some additional benefit I wasn't seeing

Its entirely personal preference, usually a good way to disguise lower quality ground beef if that's all you have on hand.
Personally not a fan of it.

what happened to disguising lower quality meat with some seasoning though .. guess this is a fancier method

I have used something like this before, but not this exactly. It will not work for smash burgers.
