Significantly faster CPU & GPU performance, up to 4 faster local AI inference (prefill), WiFi 7, 2.5G Ethernet... but still, nowhere near as good a value as the M4 mini (was down to $499 new at one point, non-edu). Soldered single NAND chip doesn't help either (2x slower SSD than on 512GB and higher SKUs). RAM is a bit slower too on the base model (153 vs 170 GBps); Apple is definitely trying to upsell you CTO M6 or M5 Pro.Latest reports suggest that the M4 mini's trade-in value is North of $500, so you might be up 2.0-2.5x on your investment already! Smilie

However if they live within (in my case) 70 miles of a (3, actually) Micro Center, shoppers will likely find that Best Buy will price match for Apple products against Micro Center. Don't know what the distance limit is, it may be even greater than that. I have (for clients) successfully gotten BB to price match extraordinary Micro Center discounts several times over the past few years.
Unfortunately, for this deal specifically, Best Buy doesn't even show the new M6 Mac minis on their site yet.

This is just CRAZY. 2 years later, my M4 Mac Mini is being traded-in to Apple for $564. $64 more than what I paid 2 years ago. I GOT PAID to use my m4 Mac mini for 2 years! HAHAH

24GB is the least memory you can run a good local agent / LLM for coding/writing. Right now that is Qwen 3.8 27B (Q4). 32GB is better but 24GB still works. 16GB is only enough for weak models or local image gen (z-image-turbo) or speech-to-text (Handy, OpenWhisper, etc..)

I thoroughly regret not getting that m4. I had an order for pickup at that amazing price of $499 like 1.5 years ago, and I let it expire. I figured I'd make due with my m1 a bit longer.

I got the M4 mac mini for $399 + tax (from Microcenter) and it is worth $565 in trade-in value. But I cannot justify to invest for a new one right now. Yes, it does everything I want to do with it for now.

I am interested in running local LLM. I think you can connect multiple mini together to use all memory.
