The Milwaukee 7 1/4 circular saw is 229.00 right now at home depot, without ANY battery, which is 64% more than this saw, again not even factoring in the price of the battery. The real answer is what tool system you already own. Most people don't own Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi and Makita because the batteries don't mix.

I have been using Ryobi tools for well over 25 years as a DIY homeowner and amateur wood worker. I still have Ryobi tools that are the old-school blue and yellow (before they changed to their neon green) which still work well. My feelings are unless you use these tools to get paid in your 9-5 job, then Ryobi brand tools are more than adequate in doing the job. That being said, Ryobi does typically make several grades of the same kind of tool. I would always stick with "brushless" if you can afford to do so and don't skimp on batteries. Ryobi makes good batteries, but again, there are "budget", "upgrade" and "premium" versions of the Ryobi batteries, so just make sure you know what you are getting.

Have this. It is absolutely gutless for anything tougher than 1x pine.
I'm a big ryobi fan- but would not waste time using this on anything more than lightweight tasks.

I own all these brands, I just use battery adapters. Some brands make better items and sometimes you just need something cheap that works a few times. Battery adapters are $15ish and then you can buy what ever from a different brand.

I really don't know what you're talking about. I've been using the 5-1/2" for most of my work lately, 6-1/2" when I need the extra depth and power, and neither of those are brushless. I recently picked this up for $30 because the guy couldn't unscrew to take the blade out. It cuts much stronger and smoother. I use it to slice through a lot of hardwood trunks i dig up. Maybe you got a dud ?

Adapting other batteries to use a Ryobi tool, probably not bad, but using a Ryobi battery for another tool is wayyy too bulky.

I started a huge home project and decided it was time to replace my NiCad Porter-Cable tools. They've been good to me for 20+ years but good batteries are hard to come by and mine only last about 10 min each in a drill and sometimes one or two cuts in my circular saw. After a ton of debate I decided to pick up Milwaukee M12 drivers and oscillating tool. My mom across the street has a few Ryobi tools and I'm impressed with their brushless HP stuff. The conundrum was the circular saw.

Long story short, I got a great deal on the 5 1/2" and a jigsaw (I needed a jigsaw). They arrived and I realized they aren't brushless. I was still quite impressed for the weight and price. So, I found a good deal on this larger saw and am blown away at it. It has a brake, good power, decent battery. Go for it if you're in the Ryobi platform.

Seconded. It's not a very strong saw, but I do really like it and use it for 95% of what I do. I tried to use it to demo a deck last summer and had to switch to my A/C saw. Not that big of a deal, it's really great as a light-duty machine.
