This Brother compact black and white laser all in one stands out for reliable home office printing and scanning, especially for envelopes, invoices, and everyday documents. Long term use points to solid Wi Fi, standard Windows printing, and low running costs when using third party toner. The main tradeoffs are that duplex scanning is missing, scan to USB flash drive is not supported, and ARM based systems may not get full Brother software support. Drum and OEM consumable costs can be high, so the value depends on how you plan to replace supplies.
Home office workers printing invoices, envelopes, and scanned documents, because it handles those tasks reliably and stays easy to fix when issues appear.
Yes, it has been used successfully for home office tasks like printing envelopes, scanning documents, and printing invoices. Long-term owners also report reliable Wi‑Fi and few issues beyond minor, easily solved problems.
Yes, third-party toner has been used without issues on this model, and Brother B&W printers are often described as tolerant of generic cartridges. The tradeoff is that some aftermarket toner can print lighter or spotty, so print quality may depend on the brand.
Brother OEM consumables are expensive, with drum replacement cited around $170 and toner around $82. Cheaper third-party toner is often found for about $15-$20, and some owners say replacing the whole printer can be cheaper than buying OEM consumables.
No, direct scan-to-USB flash drive support is not included on this model. That feature is reportedly reserved for higher-end Brother models, so you would need to scan through a computer instead.
As noted in previous posts, best to buy refurbished direct from Brother to ensure the drum is new. Seems like good advice.
I recently bought a refurbished MFC-L2807DW from Brother (not currently on sale) and have two comments and cautions:
1) Brother printer software does not support ARM processors. You may be able to print but not have all the tools and utilities.
2) Brother printers do not support 'scan to usb flash drives' except on higher end models.
No support for direct scan to usb was a total surprise to me. It's a basic feature on ever AIO printer I have owned, including the most basic models from HP and Epson. If this feature is important to you, expect to pay a lot more on a higher end Brother printer.
This is a surprise and thanks for pointing this out. I haven't been in the market buying too many printers in the last 10-15 years but everyone with a scanner can scan to usb flash drive.
I've had this printer for several years. Works extremely well for home office use. I use it mainly for printing envelopes, scanning docs, and printing invoices. Never had an issue with it that wasn't easily solvable.

Yep, the lack of support for ARM sucks when it comes to scanning. For printing standard windows drivers work just fine, I have had my version the L2740 for over 10 years and printed in excess of 10k pages. Seriously low cost of ownership with cheap third party toners and drum. I have replaced the drum, just once, I believe I paid about $100

Why would anyone buy OEM toner or drums for a Brother B&W printer? I support about 20 different Brother B&W multi-functions in different offices and we never buy Brother OEM toner or drums, even for the newest models. Aftermarket all the way. Imagine getting rid of a Brother B&W MFC/DCP, which are worth their weight in gold, because the OEM toner or drum is too expensive...

I've got an older Brother non-ADF B&W and previously purchased aftermarket toner but have since gone to just OEM. Why? The aftermarket performance isn't as good -- very light/spotty, and for the once every 1-2 years I actually need to replace the toner, it's no big deal. Fully understand why someone would go aftermarket, but again depending on how quickly you go through it, and what your experiences have been...
Any owners of this, can you confirm there are decent third-party toners that work well with it?
I've had this model for years. I've purchased and used 3rd party toner with no issue. Of course we don't print a lot, so I've only replaced the toner once.
Only thing I don't like is the ADF doesn't always seem aligned.

There is a much better deal on the Brother' page. U can buy the refurb directly from them for a much cheaper price and it has a duplex option. Here is an example-https://www.brother-usa.com/p/inkjet-printers/RMFCJ1360DW?pid=RMFCJ1360DW. It is currently $79.99 BAsically they send you a new machine. And yes, Brother is actually probably the one of the printer manufacturers which will not give any trouble with the generic cartridge. Others, one never knows, they always come up with some kind of tricks to get you to buy the OEM cartridge, especially ink ones. This is the major profit maker for them

So many people do not understand how printers and the supplies work. The printer is the vending machine, the ink/toner is the product.
Read the yield per cartridge. All devices ship with an introductory toner/ink cartridge. They sell standard and high yield replacements. Even the standard has more pages of yield than the intro cartridge. Ink is almost always the most expensive per page compared to toner. Sure the ink cartridges are cheaper than the toner cartridges, but the yield on a toner is so much higher. Also the ink printers have to keep the nozzles clear, so they need to spritz a little of the ink out regularly. The toner printers do not since it is a dry powder that is melted onto the paper.

I, too, have always used generic for my simple print-only Brother laser that lasted 15 years! I bought a refurb Brother MFC-L2807DW via Slickdeals/Brother a few months ago and am very satisfied. Can you, as apparently a frequent user, recommend a brand of aftermarket TN-830XL that produce decent prints AND are compatible with the Brother Chip? thanks.

I'd avoid a brother printer. Nothing but bad experiences with that brand.
I have a 15 year old Brother printer, I have maybe replaced the toner two or three times. It has been asking me to replace the drum and toner for years, but it still keeps running fine despite me not changing it.
Within this printer's lifespan, I've had dozens of inkjets.

I think even the starter toner is 600 pages, for reference.

I recently bought a refurbished MFC-L2807DW from Brother (not currently on sale) and have two comments and cautions:

2) Brother printers do not support 'scan to usb flash drives' except on higher end models.
No support for direct scan to usb was a total surprise to me. It's a basic feature on ever AIO printer I have owned, including the most basic models from HP and Epson. If this feature is important to you, expect to pay a lot more on a higher end Brother printer.
