  • Life is a series of negotiations, and negotiation is at the heart of collaboration—whether you are a business executive, a salesperson, a parent, a community leader, or a spouse. As a former FBI hostage negotiator, Chris Voss gives you the negotiation skills to be effective in any situation: negotiating a business deal, buying (or selling) a car, negotiating a salary, acquiring a home, renegotiating rent, deliberating with your partner, or communicating with your children. This book is a masterclass in influencing others, no matter the circumstances.

Reaching the pinnacle of his profession, he became the FBI's lead international kidnapping negotiator. • Transform Conflict into Collaboration
  • Spot Liars
  • Create Breakthroughs by Revealing the Unknown Unknowns

I wanted this book but my wife wasn't that interested, so we agreed to each pay $1.50.

I tried reading it. Some nifty stories but I had a hard time making it past chapter 4 or so. 🤷🏻 ♂️

It's because we negotiated it down.

This was a terrible book, IMO.
The gist is he's a former cop that used things like "how do you expect me to do that?" to get people to fill the gaps with a better offer, etc. It's like 1 page of content filled with a ton of self-promotional nonsense.

The Book works. My wife and I both read it and she won everything in the divorce.

Yeah IIRC the gist is basically "act like there's a power above you that you're trying to negotiate with yourself so the person you're actually negotiating with has to work with you". Sort of like the ol' car dealer "let me go talk to my manager I don't know if he's gonna want to do this deal" theatrics with a dash of "tell me what you want and, if it's convenient to me/doesn't matter to me, I'll give it to you and pretend it's a meaningful concession on my end".
