Available: About this title:
  • Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
  • Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
  • All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
  • His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
  • And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.
  • Or does he?
  • An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

If they want us to read these books, they have to stop making them into movies lol
What do you mean by this? The movie came out 5 years after (2026) the book (2021). It is a phenomenal read, probably my favorite book of all time. Highly recommend

Book is great. Audiobook is not. The audiobook made me hate Ryland Grace.

Worth the read or listen even if you've seen the movie. A lot of great moments they left out including some funny jokes

I think both of Andy Weir's books into movies worked this way.

I feel that this is a unique example of little changed from the book to the movie, but just condensed. There was definitely some good stuff left out going into the movie. I feel that either of his two book to movie adaptations can be read after watching. The worst part I'd see is that it's more difficult to cast the character in your mind if you've already seen the movie.

i read this book before the movie, and was amazed at how much logical progression stuff had to get left out to fit into that movie. it was far more than "the martain" book and movie with matt damon. there is such a wide gap between the movie and book, that i'm astonished movie only watchers didn't even notice. so if you're curious what i'm talking about, don't google it, read this book, you'll thank me later if you enjoy a good near future plausible sci-fi read.

I completely disagree. The audiobook experience is tremendous. The narration is exquisite. It is an outstanding "theater of the mind" version of the story.

It's widely considered one of the best audiobook adaptations of all time. I understand that you didn't enjoy it though.

Same. I'm not one of those "the book is always better" people, but I was shocked at how much was missing from the movie. The movie felt like a whirlwind of things that just happened, while the book took time to explain why things were happening.

There were major plot points from the book that were resolved simply with a single line or two in the movie.

10X better than the movie. So much nuance and emotions that are left out of the movie, especially the relationship with Rocky.

The book is, imho, very geeky. It really does get into the weeds to talk through some of the sci-fi handwavium that just "happens" in the movie. Much of it is stuff we take for granted in the 2 hour storytelling format. As an aerospace engineer I appreciated the book's (Weir's) attempts to legitimize as much of the sci-fi as possible and it made it that much more enjoyable to read. I can also see how it might be a little too much STEM-fluff for someone looking for just a space drama. Much of it couldn't, and shouldn't, have been squeezed into 150 minutes of film. It would have needed a 10-12 hour season mini-series to have included all the story-tying details, and it likely would have had pacing issues if it did.

The variation in the ending between the book and the movie, though subtle, was also more realistic.
