NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "How did our democracy go wrong? This extraordinary document ... is Applebaum's answer." —Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny

The Pulitzer Prize–winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism.

From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else. Elegantly written and urgently argued, Twilight of Democracy is a brilliant dissection of a world-shaking shift and a stirring glimpse of the road back to democratic values.

The death of democracy always starts by your political party losing an election. It doesn't matter what your party is.

Not sure what's up with all the flippancy. The fact is that authoritarianism is on the rise, not just in America, where is more powerful than it's ever been, but in many other countries around the world as well. That's just simple fact.

The flippancy, at least from me, is coming from a place of "you'd better not, or else" followed by "I told you so". This is why I'm a proud shareholder in tech/defense. Idiots who can't control their emotions made it too easy for me to retire early. Betting on how stupid human nature is has been an absolute boon. W for predicable conflict.

Yes, and to think all I had to do was recognize human nature for what it is and what it's demonstrated to be over thousands of years. If only there was a sign, right? Honestly, man, it's sad that "pattern recognition" gets dragged so hard these days, given various -ist labels as if to shame the observant.

Imagine virtue signaling oneself into complete misery. But hey, at least you have plenty of company.

Advocating for pluralism within an anomic society while failing to address the resulting social fragmentation and subsequent expansion of the police state represents a deeply flawed approach. Blame yourself, lil fella.
