This ExpertBook CX54 open box deal stands out for strong specs at a low price, with the Core Ultra 5, 16GB LPDDR5X, touchscreen, and 2K display making it feel fast for everyday use. The Chromebook Plus hardware also appears capable of running Windows, though that path can bring driver and audio issues and may require BIOS flashing. Open box condition has ranged from nearly pristine to display model wear, so battery health and screen condition are the main things to check. A solid value if the unit you get is in good shape.

Common Questions (5)

  • The Core Ultra 5, 16GB LPDDR5X, and touchscreen specs are strong enough for Windows 11, but Windows installs can run into driver issues on some components. Audio and power-saving features may not work correctly, and some installs may require flashing the BIOS.

  • Battery health has ranged from about 83% with 425-435 charge cycles to 93% with 2 cycles and 99% on a near-unused unit. Open-box units can therefore arrive anywhere from heavily used display-model condition to nearly new.

  • Many units have arrived with no screen burn-in and no scratches, but some open-box examples have shown heavy external scratches. Checking the display before leaving the store is important, especially because display-model units can have wear.

  • Chromebook diagnostics can show battery details clearly: open Diagnostics in the launcher/explorer and click Battery. That view lists the battery information, including health and cycle count.

  • Yes, several open-box units included AI Pro, and one pickup specifically reported 1 year of AI Pro. The listing can therefore come with the subscription bundled in, but it appears to vary by unit.

With these specs it will most likely get the update to Googlebook OS. This is my plan to check it out.

Can you install Windows on this thing?
It's not simple. You got to flash the firmware. Why can't you just buy a Windows laptop if you want Windows? There is no guarantee that hardware will work on windows.

Yes but not fully. You have to flash the bios and the audio is not working.

As per another comment why not just buy a windows laptop, a windows laptop with this config currently is quite a bit more so I understand why people are looking at this option. this is slickdeals after all, not letsjustthrowourmoneyaway.com

Pretty good deal if you need a Chromebook.

There are still a few available at the Chicago Burbank location.

Depends, some are getting nice machine, some others (like me) just returning Galaxy book from the other deal that comes with OLED burn outs and it was open box excellent...
I almost guarantee 95% of these are former shelf display units. For this Asus it isn't bad, other than maybe battery health and the deal is still good. For any OLEDs? Yeah... get ready to remember the "2TB Google AI Pro storage" banner BURNED IN the top middle of the screen because of a full static banner there.

I grabbed one this afternoon. I had to return the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus from the deal earlier this week because of screen burn in. Haven't checked the stats on this yet but did check the screen before I left and it was good. Will check more tonight. Heck of a deal if it has decent battery health and the display is in good shape after testing.

Just my experience, this came in a generic box. Battery health was 83% with 435 charges. That said, it's perfect condition, no scratch or screen burn in. For what it is, I might just keep it, would like battery to be better health but I can replace that myself for $50. I'm really surprised for how long it ran, it is in such good shape, maybe speaks to how durable this laptop is (possibly as a display model)

Possible candidate for Googlebook OS in the future?

the only one I've found so far is "open box - good" condition unit 3 hours drive away. Worth it for a chance at GoogleBook OS? lol...

When the Specifications list "micro" SD card does it actually mean a micro card such as you'd have in your phone? Wouldn't a regular size SD card slot make more sense since you could always use an adapter to insert a micro card into it while the reverse isn't possible?
