The onboard BMS may detect cell discharge below 'cutoff' voltage, and refuse to charge from this state (asleep), while a slow trickle charge (wake) can boost voltage enough to trigger regular charging.
edit: the USB-C PD is an In/Out, and can charge the battery.

I'd personally rather put the money towards a larger power station that has a larger output. 150w is not a lot. You can just use a 12V inverter for loads that low.

I was thinking this would be useful for keeping survival devices alive (cellphones, laptops, rechargeable batteries for lights) during a brief power outage over the winter for someone who already has a few EGO batteries. Does it not make sense for that? Should I just get the newer device?

If I have a 5 year old ego trimmer battery that won't charge anymore, this USB c model could theoretically "wake it up"?
Is the battery safe to continue using after waking up?

Alternatively, if you have another battery of the same size or bigger, you could jump it for a few seconds. Obviously do it at your own risk. But I've revived a few from deep sleep. Otherwise, it could be that one or more cells have gone bad, in which case you'll need to replace those cells.

Whoa, that's interesting. I wonder if my anecdote is related.

Got a 2nd battery on FB marketplace for $20 because guy said it stopped working in his push mower. I put it on the fast charger and it said it was fully charged. Sure enough did not work on my push mower.

For some reason, worked on smaller devices like string trimmer and leafblower. I used it for that for a while and when it was low battery I put it on the slow/trickle charger instead. Since then it has worked in my mower, but does seem to die a little quicker than my healthy battery of the same size.

Now I really only use the fast charger if I need it right then, which is very rare, so I can't tell you if doing that would make it revert back to a small tool battery only.

I just used this first gen last week with power outage. I would have got the newer one for this price. They are handy with those big mower batteries. I have about eight and some batteries did come back to life after 4-5yrs, didn't know about the USB C thing. I thought it was the fast charger that sparked it back to life.
