This is a 4 bay USB C enclosure for spinning SATA drives and bulk storage, with 10Gbps connectivity and HDMI video pass through for laptop presentations. The enclosure can work well for Plex expansion, homelab use, and software RAID or Storage Spaces, and the interface is fast enough for hard drives even if the drives themselves are the bottleneck. The HDMI output depends on the host USB C port supporting video and on using the USB C to C cable. Caveats include JBOD only, no NAS or RAID hardware, extra brackets needed for 2.5 inch drives, and concerns about heat, noise, and occasional disconnects.

Common Questions (5)

  • 10Gbps means 10 gigabits per second, which is about 1.25GB/s or roughly 900-1000MB/s after overhead. That is fast enough for spinning HDDs and many bulk-storage uses, but it can still be slower than fast SSDs and the drives themselves may be the bottleneck.

  • It is a JBOD device, not a NAS, so it just presents the drives to the host computer. It can still be useful with software RAID or Storage Spaces on the host, but it does not provide built-in RAID or network sharing.

  • The HDMI port is for video pass-through and only works if the host USB-C port supports video output. It also requires the USB-C to USB-C cable, and the output may mirror the existing display rather than extend it.

  • It is intended for spinning HDDs and bulk storage, not SSDs. The enclosure's design and the comments about drive speed make it a better fit for 5400/7200rpm drives than for SSD-heavy setups.

  • It is advertised as hot-swappable, but the drive-install instructions indicate you have to take the enclosure apart to install a drive. That makes it poor for frequent drive changes even though it can still be used as a multi-drive storage box.

"blazing" 10Gbps... In 1999.
It's a USB external storage enclosure for $95. What are you on about? Set your expectations with price accordingly

i'd get 4 of those refurbed jobbies. about .4 the price total. more reliable too. when one usb link goes down, you still have 3 drives running.

If you're doing JBOD over USB or esata, you're doing it wrong.
Depends on the use case, but iin most cases I'd agree. But where the lack of redundancy is just risky for long term storage, putting SSDs in a giant USB C enclosure is just....why. Why would a person do that.

Being cheap or being ignorant. or both.

In their defense, you are dealing with 5400rpm or 7200rpm SATA drives so the output is faster than the drives can send. Actually faster than the theoretical speed of SATA could even deliver if the drives were not the bottleneck.

The issue is having one failure point, the single usb-c cable. They're better than the older usb connections, but they're terrible nonetheless. A proper setup is a NAS. A weak NAS beats a bunch of stuff on a USB port any day. Heck, even SATA cables are flaky. I speak from experience. That's why servers don't use SATA cabling. It's crap.

Those shouldn't be on the market. Even with the cover removed they can't dissipate any heat.

a 5400 rpm drive doesn't make all that much heat at full fury.

Probably not. Those who know that expect a consumer dock to handle any consumer drive. Those who don't know that don't know what drive they're putting in it.

Ya no kidding. I had a 10TB fail the other day and was worried they would not replace it with current pricing but they arewoot.. I've never had a drive just flat out fail before, makes me nervous for the other drives.
It can happen even in the best of situations, but the biggest thing that kills HDDs is heat. I try to keep mine all under 40c.

This is $95 for a USB hub pre-connected to 4 SATA-USB bridges inside a plastic box.
