This is a 4 bay USB C enclosure for spinning SATA drives and bulk storage, with 10Gbps connectivity and HDMI video pass through for laptop presentations. The enclosure can work well for Plex expansion, homelab use, and software RAID or Storage Spaces, and the interface is fast enough for hard drives even if the drives themselves are the bottleneck. The HDMI output depends on the host USB C port supporting video and on using the USB C to C cable. Caveats include JBOD only, no NAS or RAID hardware, extra brackets needed for 2.5 inch drives, and concerns about heat, noise, and occasional disconnects.

Common Questions (5)

  • 10Gbps means 10 gigabits per second, which is about 1.25GB/s or roughly 900-1000MB/s after overhead. That is fast enough for spinning HDDs and many bulk-storage uses, but it can still be slower than fast SSDs and the drives themselves may be the bottleneck.

  • It is a JBOD device, not a NAS, so it just presents the drives to the host computer. It can still be useful with software RAID or Storage Spaces on the host, but it does not provide built-in RAID or network sharing.

  • The HDMI port is for video pass-through and only works if the host USB-C port supports video output. It also requires the USB-C to USB-C cable, and the output may mirror the existing display rather than extend it.

  • It is intended for spinning HDDs and bulk storage, not SSDs. The enclosure's design and the comments about drive speed make it a better fit for 5400/7200rpm drives than for SSD-heavy setups.

  • It is advertised as hot-swappable, but the drive-install instructions indicate you have to take the enclosure apart to install a drive. That makes it poor for frequent drive changes even though it can still be used as a multi-drive storage box.

I have an Synology DS918+ that never got a lot of use and I've been thinking about bringing it back online. Is this a better unit?

Depends... if you didn't need the network-attached feature or the easy hot-swap feature, and just wanted to connect a bunch of disks to a computer, then this would be simpler to understand and operate. Or, if you wanted to roll your own NAS and your server didn't have enough HDD bays, then this could be one way to add more.

Divide by 8. 10 Gbps, not 10 GBps. This is maybe 900-1000 MB/s, much slower than most SSDs. Good enough for four HDs if they're not SSDs. If you're, say, loading a 200GB model into RAM, well, it's gonna be a while.
Nobody loads 200gb into RAM from a DAS. 10gbps is PLENTY for a DAS. Surely you understand basic use cases for DAS/NAS devices if you regularly load 200gb of data into memory on a regular basis.

Reviews say this thing gets loud, hot, disconnects for no reason, and is not hot swappable. Also it's just JBOD with zero raid... I can think of some use cases for something like this, but not for my needs.
Software RAID exists and is preferable in small setups imo. Unraid on a mini pc + DAS is a great little home server for 99.9% of the world. I regularly have 6-10 concurrent streams going out on Plex without a hiccup.

These are and always will be dogshit for anything outside of short transfers. It's not even the same realm of device. Using these for 24/7 data connection is not smart.

Like this is better in any significant way.

If you're doing JBOD over USB or esata, you're doing it wrong.
Wrong.

You're thinking of RAID.

JBOD over ZFS is resilient no matter the interface.

Can USB be more finicky? Sure.

But try fitting a SAS card in a mini PC.

JBOD only, that part's been covered three times already. The thing I care about is the heat you mentioned, nobody followed up on that half. My house sits near 80 inside most of the summer out here. Four spinners in a box with one small fan is not a Phoenix setup.

So, I think your saying the Synology is still a better NAS.

I'm saying the Synology is a NAS and this one is not.
