This is a 4 bay USB C enclosure for spinning SATA drives and bulk storage, with 10Gbps connectivity and HDMI video pass through for laptop presentations. The enclosure can work well for Plex expansion, homelab use, and software RAID or Storage Spaces, and the interface is fast enough for hard drives even if the drives themselves are the bottleneck. The HDMI output depends on the host USB C port supporting video and on using the USB C to C cable. Caveats include JBOD only, no NAS or RAID hardware, extra brackets needed for 2.5 inch drives, and concerns about heat, noise, and occasional disconnects.

  • The HDMI port can provide video pass-through when the host USB-C supports video output and you use the USB-C to C cable.

  • The 10Gbps USB-C interface can be sufficient for bulk storage use cases even though it is limited by the installed SATA drives.

  • The enclosure can work well for homelab use when connected to a mini PC.

  • The enclosure can support software RAID workflows such as Windows Storage Spaces for expanding Plex storage with multiple SATA drives.

  • The enclosure can run hot and may be loud with four spinners, especially in warm environments with limited fan cooling.

  • The enclosure can experience brief disconnects and recognition issues after RAID setup, including needing careful USB port selection.

  • The HDMI pass-through may only mirror the existing display rather than expand the desktop, depending on USB-C 3.2 support.

  • The enclosure may require taking it completely apart to install a drive, which undermines the advertised hot-swappable claim.

Am I stupid? What's the point of HDMI on a hard drive enclosure? Does it have some kind of operating system where you can play media directly from the enclosure?

Note: Please ensure the USB-C port on your host supports video output and use the USB-C to C cable, or the HDMI port will not work.

Specs look solid. And the pass-through video seems useful for presentations with less lag.

Now if only storage didn't cost one soul per drive...

As speedkilz88 noted below, it's for video pass through:

Note: Please ensure the USB-C port on your host supports video output and use the USB-C to C cable, or the HDMI port will not work.

Just adding this as a reply for context so it doesn't get buried. Please like speedkilz88's comment, not mine.

For an enclosure, why are there no pictures of how the drives are housed or how it is opened?

EDIT: needed to scroll down on the Amazon site a bit more.

"blazing" 10Gbps... In 1999.
10 Gigabytes transferred in 1 second seems blazing to me. But then again, I'm in my 50s now ...

So basically it's a USB-C 4-bay JBOD hard-drive enclosure with USB-C video pass-through. One comment suggested that it would only mirror the existing display and not expand the desktop.

I guess it makes sense if you only have a laptop, but only if you have USB-C 3.2.

It looks like a neat idea, but just not a good use case for me, I guess.

Now if it was an e-GPU case... But obviously that would cost three times as much.

"Note: For 2.5'' hard drives, additional 2.5'' to 3.5'' mounting brackets are required (Not included)."

Where would you get the required brackets?

There are tons of these on Amazon.

That one is plastic but a ripoff of the old WD Raptor solid cast metal adapters, of which I still have many because they're cool - pun intended. Of course there are much cheaper/flimsier options on Amazon as well that work just fine.
