The Retroid Pocket 5 is a compact Android retro handheld that stands out for strong emulation at its price, especially PS2, GameCube, Wii, and much of the Switch library, with some light Steam and Android gaming possible too. The 5.5 inch OLED screen, larger controls, and clean black design are recurring highlights, and newer batches appear to ship with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Setup takes some tinkering, and the device is not truly pocketable. The small screen and 60Hz streaming latency are the main drawbacks, and more demanding Xbox or PlayStation 3 gaming still calls for a pricier handheld.

  • People using it as a streaming-and-light-PC side device, because it can run Android games, light PC games, and a limited selection of Steam titles.

  • Retro handheld fans playing PS2, GameCube, and lighter Switch games, because the device runs those systems well with driver tweaks and upscaling.

  • Players who want a compact Android emulation device for short trips, because it fits in a bag easily and can be somewhat pocketable in relaxed pants or shorts.

  • Parents buying a handheld for Minecraft Java or PS1-era indie games, because those lighter games fit its performance level without needing a bigger upgrade.

  • People who need a larger display for long sessions, because the 5.5-inch screen can feel too small and strain older eyes.

  • Players who want a true pocketable handheld, because it still needs a bag or sling and is not comfortably pocketable.

  • Gamers expecting smooth PS3 or Xbox 360 emulation, because Android support for those systems is still poor or not yet handled well on this chip.

  • TV players wanting a console-like Android docked experience, because HDMI output can add noticeable input lag.

How does this compare to the s26 fe for emulation? https://slickdeals.net/f/20084589
If you have an Android phone that you don't use, try emulating some games on it. Then you'll fall into this rabbit hole and start asking for more power. Don't ask me how I know this.

I went from a phone → Odin 3 → ROG Ally X, then sold the Odin 3 and got an Odin Portal 2 to go with the Ally X. 😂

I would go with the Odin. I own both as well as a million other handhelds and they all have their strenghts and weaknesses. The Odin 2 Portal is my favorite even over my steam deck.

This is crazy. Most companies are raising prices and/or give less ram. Retroid is giving more ram for the original price and in this case even less. This is hard to pass up.

Dumb question. Does this come with games? What kinds of games? I, obviously, have no ideas.
No it doesn't.

I set these up for people frequently. It's amazing how much power we can squeeze out of the SD865 with Turnip drivers. RP5 can play the entire PS2 and GC library without issue. About 90% of the Wii library runs well. Xbox is hit and miss with HakuX but it at least handles Halo 1 &2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future without issue which are the 4 games most people are still after. It can handle probably 70% of the Switch library if you use the right drivers and use EmuReady for configs - some Switch games need to be scaled down to 0.75x or 0.5x resolution to run well but for $166 you'd be hard pressed to find something better. I've gotten GTA5 Lite, Saints Row 3&4, and the Batman Arkham PC games all running at 45-60fps using Gamehub and GameNative. The latest batch of RP5's are coming with 12gb of RAM and 120hz OLED screens from the RP6. We're still trying to figure out how to actually utilize the 120hz part but I'm sure in just a matter of weeks we'll get there. Sure there's more powerful systems if you want to drop $250+ but the value proposition of the RP5 can't be beat.
Can you set me one up? Messaging you now

I am honestly confused why we need more powerful android handhelds? If it can play PS2 games perfectly is there really any benefit to more power?

Got this for kiddo - Minecraft Java edition

The jump up to RP6 didn't seem worth it with this being the main driver.

Runs ArmadaOS, but pretty underpowered. If it were sub $100 I'd bite.

It's coming from consumer junkies who salivate over every new release instead of playing games like these machines were intended to do.
Its coming from emulators for XBox, PS3, and Steam games. Those games demand more power and memory.

I have the RP6 and I think the Odin 2 Portal is better buy IMO. The bigger screen is worth it.
