Yeah, the demand for more horsepower in these emulators always has me a little confused. My HTC Touch Pro 2 had a PS1 emulator in 2009.
It's coming from consumer junkies who salivate over every new release instead of playing games like these machines were intended to do.

Dumb question. Does this come with games? What kinds of games? I, obviously, have no ideas.
No, comes preloaded with various emulators, but games are BYO. It's also an android device, with play store access, so any android games you've bought that have controller support can be played on it too.

Expect to dedicate 30-60 minutes to getting it set up assuming you already have your games backed up and ready to load.

Check out retrogamecorp on YouTube for some good guides on getting it set up.

True.
But also, i see videos from Retro Game Corps and Joeysretrohandhelds about emulator software for PS3, Xbox 360, and Switch. So in that regard, I'm thinking the horsepower in those $200-400 handhelds is being used.
Then it becomes an issue of defining what 'retro' means in video games haha

does not come with games, you load your own ROMs into them to play. It emulates other consoles. Or can use as a streaming device, comes as a blank slate.

A powerful console from 2024
Name a NEW purpose built handheld at or better within this price point in....2026. Especially with 12GB of ram as they are now shipping with. We'll wait.

Silliness aside, the games you are emulating aren't getting any harder to play. This can play much of the Switch library, including BOTW at full speed and 1x resolution. Not to mention any PS2, GC, 3DS, and down, all of those upscaled without issue. For any better you are going to need to spend double or buy used..and likely still spend more, plus most of those options are far less pocketable.

did you get 8gb or 12gb? Thought I saw somewhere that all newer RP5 are shipping with 12

**update I pulled the trigger. Most sites were saying Ambernic ran out of 8gb so this should come with 12gb
I purchased this back in Aug and received a 12GB.

Yeah, the 865 will probably handle PS2/Gamecube era without any issues (maybe can't upscale as high as you want on some games). The newer processors are both for the systems you mentioned and increasingly for emulating PC games on Android, so you get the versatility of something like a Steam Deck in the much smaller and more battery efficient ARM handheld package. The FEX layer has gotten pretty impressive in what PC stuff it can handle over the last year. I have an Odin 3 and what a Snapdragon Elite can do now that the driver support has gotten closer to where it needs to be is pretty incredible.

Or just people who want to emulate more than PS1? I don't get why that's a hard concept to understand.

You can emulate PS1 and below on a damn toaster these days so that's not the issue. If you're looking at Gamecube, PS2, Wii, etc then you need more power than.

If all I was after was PS2/Gamecube and below, then I'd be all over the RP5. I've currently got a device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 in it and I don't see myself upgrading until it literally falls apart because I don't need to emulate anything higher than Switch.

Some people absolutely want the latest and greatest simply because it's new...that'll never change. ALSO, because the term "emulation" carries such a broad range of hardware requirements, more power often is 100% justified, depending on what you're trying to emulate or run on it (Steam/PC games, for example).

The issue is PS3 and Xbox 360 emulation is still a joke on android. So you might be paying for horsepower you can't really use, depending on your use case of course. Also Switch emulation works, or it doesn't at this price point. You'll open up your Switch options a little, but not a lot even by spending double on another android retro handheld such as an Odin, or triple on a Thor. But most Switch games that won't play on the RP5, really need something like a Steam Deck (or better) to truly enjoy because they are doing something weird, for example with Unreal Engine, or are emulated themselves (even on the Switch), such as Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. Anything more 'retro' doesn't matter now much CPU you throw at it, the games (generally) can't run any better once you hit a certain threshold.

FWIW, I recently downgraded from an Ayn Thor Pro 12GB to this exact handheld and I haven't found a single Switch game I could play on the Ayn Thor, that I can't play on the RP5. Made several hundred in pure profit selling my USED Thor on eBay, and basically bought this for free using the profit….with money to spare.

*If you want to do Steam / PC games, that is an entirely different conversation.

I set these up for people frequently. It's amazing how much power we can squeeze out of the SD865 with Turnip drivers. RP5 can play the entire PS2 and GC library without issue. About 90% of the Wii library runs well. Xbox is hit and miss with HakuX but it at least handles Halo 1 &2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future without issue which are the 4 games most people are still after. It can handle probably 70% of the Switch library if you use the right drivers and use EmuReady for configs - some Switch games need to be scaled down to 0.75x or 0.5x resolution to run well but for $166 you'd be hard pressed to find something better. I've gotten GTA5 Lite, Saints Row 3&4, and the Batman Arkham PC games all running at 45-60fps using Gamehub and GameNative. The latest batch of RP5's are coming with 12gb of RAM and 120hz OLED screens from the RP6. We're still trying to figure out how to actually utilize the 120hz part but I'm sure in just a matter of weeks we'll get there. Sure there's more powerful systems if you want to drop $250+ but the value proposition of the RP5 can't be beat.

I would hardly consider PS3 and XB360 a joke on Android. I just finished Infamous using ARMSX3 with my Odin 3. The progress made in just the last 4 months has been nothing short of incredible. Give it just a few more months and the Android ports of the emulators will be to to par with RPCS3 and Xenia. You would have been correct a few months ago but I think you need to update your info and try the latest versions of Xendroid, X360 Mobile, and ARMSX3 on an SD8 Elite chip device like the Odin 3 or Konkr Pocket Fit. I wouldn't bother trying them on the RP5 or an SD8 Gen 2 devices like the Thor -- they can't handle it. At least not yet. That might improve with time though.

Retroid 6 or Odin 2 Portal? Would rather buy once, cry once.
I own Odin 2 Portal. Best deal for portable handhelds right now in my opinion. It's an "endgame" device if you don't care about pocketability and don't want to spend crazy money. Odin 3 is obviously better but also more expensive and has a smaller screen.
