The Retroid Pocket 5 is a compact Android retro handheld that stands out for strong emulation at its price, especially PS2, GameCube, Wii, and much of the Switch library, with some light Steam and Android gaming possible too. The 5.5 inch OLED screen, larger controls, and clean black design are recurring highlights, and newer batches appear to ship with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Setup takes some tinkering, and the device is not truly pocketable. The small screen and 60Hz streaming latency are the main drawbacks, and more demanding Xbox or PlayStation 3 gaming still calls for a pricier handheld.
Common Questions (5)
It is not truly pocketable, so most people will want a bag, sling, or backpack for transport. The 5.5-inch screen and larger controls are praised for usability, but several users find the display small for older eyes and prefer larger-screen handhelds for comfort.
It can handle PS2 and GameCube well, with many users reporting strong Wii performance and a large chunk of the Switch library. More demanding Xbox, PS3, and some Switch titles can be hit-or-miss, and heavier PC/Steam games are only a bonus on this 865-based device.
Recent units are reportedly shipping with 12GB RAM, and multiple buyers confirmed receiving 12GB models. Older listing pages may not have specified the memory amount, but current batches appear to have moved to 12GB.
It does not come with games. It ships as a blank Android handheld with preloaded emulators, and you load your own ROMs; it can also run Android games from the Play Store and act as a streaming device.
The RP5 is commonly used at 60Hz, but recent batches reportedly include a 120Hz OLED panel. Firmware and calibration are the limiting factors, and tools like PULSE can switch supported units to 120Hz.

Yeah, the demand for more horsepower in these emulators always has me a little confused. My HTC Touch Pro 2 had a PS1 emulator in 2009.

But also, i see videos from Retro Game Corps and Joeysretrohandhelds about emulator software for PS3, Xbox 360, and Switch. So in that regard, I'm thinking the horsepower in those $200-400 handhelds is being used.
Then it becomes an issue of defining what 'retro' means in video games haha

Silliness aside, the games you are emulating aren't getting any harder to play. This can play much of the Switch library, including BOTW at full speed and 1x resolution. Not to mention any PS2, GC, 3DS, and down, all of those upscaled without issue. For any better you are going to need to spend double or buy used..and likely still spend more, plus most of those options are far less pocketable.
**update I pulled the trigger. Most sites were saying Ambernic ran out of 8gb so this should come with 12gb

You can emulate PS1 and below on a damn toaster these days so that's not the issue. If you're looking at Gamecube, PS2, Wii, etc then you need more power than.
If all I was after was PS2/Gamecube and below, then I'd be all over the RP5. I've currently got a device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 in it and I don't see myself upgrading until it literally falls apart because I don't need to emulate anything higher than Switch.
Some people absolutely want the latest and greatest simply because it's new...that'll never change. ALSO, because the term "emulation" carries such a broad range of hardware requirements, more power often is 100% justified, depending on what you're trying to emulate or run on it (Steam/PC games, for example).

FWIW, I recently downgraded from an Ayn Thor Pro 12GB to this exact handheld and I haven't found a single Switch game I could play on the Ayn Thor, that I can't play on the RP5. Made several hundred in pure profit selling my USED Thor on eBay, and basically bought this for free using the profit….with money to spare.
*If you want to do Steam / PC games, that is an entirely different conversation.
