I had a Scaleblaster in my first house. No idea if it actually worked, because there's just not an easy way to know if it's working if your plumbing and fixtures already have scale build up.

If you're buying this to "soften" your water, that's not what they're really for; they may have some small effect because more of the minerals wind up in your water instead of clinging to your plumbing, but they're primarily for keeping your pipes from getting restricted by scale deposits.

For $99, it might be good insurance.

Yeah, I've always put these descaler devices in the same rough category as snake oil. Maybe they work, maybe they don't, but either way you'll probably never be able to quantify the devices effectiveness. If you have hard water and also a water softener, you know very quickly when you run out of salt, there's no "maybe it's working, maybe its not", you'll know within days that it's not working anymore. Water softener manufacturers and Salt providers would've been out of business 50yrs ago if these cheap Descaler devices could actually provide whole home soft water.
